A pair of magnetic bodies (33a, 33b) extending in an axial direction of a color cathode ray tube are arranged apart from each other in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction so as to shield an external magnetic field acting on three electron beams forming a row in the direction perpendicular to the axial direction. A ring-like 6-pole magnet plate (30) disposed in a plane perpendicular to the axial direction is arranged in substantially a central region in a longitudinal direction of the magnetic bodies. These 6-pole magnet plate and magnetic bodies arranged in the particular positional relationship generate a magnetic field distributed to have a plurality of peaks of intensity on the orbit of the central beam. The magnetic field runs on the orbit of the central beam toward one magnetic body around one of the peaks, and runs toward the other magnetic body around the adjacent peak. The cathode (46) is positioned intermediate between the second and third peaks of the magnetic field intensity as counted from the side of a panel. The particular construction makes it possible to decrease the magnetic field component acting on the central beam without decreasing the magnetic field components acting on both side beams. As a result, the central beam is prevented from an undesired moving.

A phosphor screen (7) comprising three color phosphor layers that emit red, green, and blue light is provided on the inner surface of a panel (1) of an envelope, and an in-line type electron gun assembly (6) for emitting three electron beams (5R, 5G, 5B) aligned on the same axis (generally a horizontal axis X) is mounted in a neck (3). This electron gun assembly (6) has three cathodes arranged in a row, and a plurality of electrodes for sequentially focusing and accelerating the electron beams from the respective cathodes toward the phosphor screen. A pair of belt-like magnetic segments (20) are provided on the outer wall of the neck of the envelope to serve as magnetic members for adjusting an external magnetic field. Each magnetic segment (20) is made of a hot-rolled silicon steel plate having a thickness of 0.35 mm, a width of 4 mm, and a length of 40 mm in the direction of the tube axis. The magnetic segments (20) are arranged such that their centers in the longitudinal direction correspond to the cathodes on an electron beam alignment plane, and extend in the back-and-forth direction of the tube axis each by 20 mm about the cathodes (10) as the center. By these magnetic segments (20), a change in convergence caused by the external magnetic field can be suppressed.

A deflection yoke (10) includes a horizontal deflection coil (11), a vertical deflection coil (12), an insulating frame (13) made of an insulating material, a deflection adjusting plate (20) attached to an outer circumferential surface of the insulating frame (13), and a ferrite core (14) covering at least a part of an outer circumference of the insulating frame (13). The deflection adjusting plate (20) is fixed to the outer circumferential surface of the insulating frame (13), under the condition of being surrounded by a high-soft resin material (21) with a hardness of 10 to 60. Because of this, even when the deflection adjusting plate (20) vibrates during driving, the deflection adjusting plate (20) does not directly bump into the insulating frame (13), so that the noise generated by the deflection yoke (10) can be reduced significantly.

In a deflection yoke for use in a color cathode ray tube receiver, two sets (30, 31) of sextuple pole coils formed of bifilar windings are disposed around the orbits of three electron beams emitted from an electron gun of a cathode ray tube. Horizontal-period parabolic currents produced in a bridge circuit consisting of saturable reactors (36, 37) are caused to flow in such sextuple pole coils (30,31). Further more the parabolic currents are modulated at the vertical period by the saturable reactors (36, 37). Then sextuple-pole magnetic fields are generated by the modulated parabolic currents to thereby exert vertical force on the three electron beams, hence realizing proper correction of ΔVCR to consequently optimize the balance between the corners and the center of a screen. Such optimization is conventionally difficult due to some restrictions existing in the winding distribution of a vertical deflection coil and a horizontal deflection coil in relation to convergence and focus of side beams.
