A display device comprising a cathode ray tube is provided with a holder which comprises a faceplate and which is arranged in front of the display window. The space between the faceplate and the display window is filled with a liquid or a gel having a refractive index which differs maximally 0.25 from the refractive index of the display window and faceplate. An improved image display, in particular an improved contrast and a flatter image are obtained. In a further embodiment, the holder is fixed to the implosion protection band of the cathode ray tube.

A conforming filter (50) for a video display unit (VDU). The VDU includes a cathode ray tube (CRT) with a curved faceplate and an aperture defining bezel (28). The filter having at least antireffective properties, includes a plastic substrate having a thickness between about 0.8 and 1.2 mm. The thickness is such that the filter may be made to substantially conform to the curvature of a cathode ray tube faceplate (26). The filter may be assembled in a VDU by removing the bezel, locating the filter adjacent the CRT, and applying pressure around a perimeter region of the filter to cause it to substantially conform to the curvature of the faceplate. The filter may be retained in a conforming position adjacent the faceplate by the bezel. The filter may also be attached to a bezel having a curved surface. The filter conforms to the curvature of the surface when then attached.

The combination of a filter element (16) and a filter bezel (18) is adapted to be added to a video display terminal that does not have an installed filter. The filter and bezel are adapted to be mounted to the terminal without opening the enclosure of the terminal. The filter conforms to the face of the cathode ray tube and the bezel presses the filter against the face. The filter bezel may be adapted with hanger means (40) that permit the filter and bezel to be removably attached to the terminal. A filter for a CRT screen according to the invention is constituted such that a compound sheet consisting of a conductive net and a transparent resin film is molded so as to be closely attached to the CRT screen, and also to avoid the occurrence of moire fringes, the mesh of the net is selected at a suitable value such that the ratio of the pitch of the scanning lines of the CRT and the pitch of the wires of the net does not fall near simple integers or the inverse numbers thereof. The filter can shut off the electromagnetic waves, electrostatic charge, ultraviolet rays, etc. which are generated from the CRT, without spoiling the resolution of the CRT and can substantially prevent adverse influences on the human body by the CRT. No moire fringes are produced on the screen. A hard coating treatment and a glare-proofing treatment are further performed, so that an illumination lamps or the like in the room are not reflected from the filter surface. Therefore, human operators can continue their work without fatigue of the eyes and without adverse mental influence based on such fatigue. Further, when the surface of the CRT filter is cleaned or even if a point of pencil or the like accidentally touches the filter surface, no scratching is caused on the surface.

A computer monitor hood comprises top, left side and right side shading panels each having an outwardly facing surface, a monitor facing surface, front, rear, left and right side edges. A counterweight receiving portion is disposed on the computer monitor and has a first slip-resistant surface. A counterweight having a second slip-resistant surface is selectively manually placeable in any one of a plurality of front-to-rear positions on the counterweight receiving portion, with the first and second slip-resistant surfaces being in cooperating engagement one with the other so as to retain the counterweight in any selected position, thereby balancing the computer monitor hood at a selected position on the computer monitor such that the top, left side, and right side shading panels each project forwardly from the front of the computer monitor, at the respective of the top, left side, and right side surfaces of the computer monitor, so as to shade the screen of the computer monitor. In another embodiment, the top shading panel includes a substantially rigid external layer, and a compliant layer of easily displaceable material disposed on the top shading panel opposite the outwardly facing surface, which compliant layer conforms to the shape of the contacted portion of the monitor, thereby receiving the monitor in seated relation, thus keeping the monitor hood in place. In yet another embodiment, an elastic member or a spring member biases the left and right shading panels into frictional contact with said left and right side surfaces of the monitor.
