A miniature X-ray source device (10) is connected to a distal end of a guiding wire for insertion towards a desired location within an animal body for effecting radiation therapy. The X-ray source device comprises a vacuum tube (12) containing a cathode (13) and an anode (14) spaced apart at some distance from each other; electron freeing means (17) for freeing electrons from the cathode; electric field means (15) for applying during use a high-voltage electric field between the cathode and the anode for accelerating the free electrons; the vacuum tube being at least partly transparent to X-ray radiation emitted by the anode, as well as cryogenic cooling means (22) for cooling at least the anode. The cooling means comprise at least one supply passageway (23a) for supplying pressurized gas towards the anode and at least one exhaust passageway (23b) for exhausting the pressurized gas from the anode, the supply passageway and the exhaust passageway being interconnected by means of an expansion chamber (24) surrounding at least partly the anode.

A device for generating X-rays or electron beams is described. The cathode of the device is mounted on a ceramic insulator which becomes hot during operation, and the ceramic insulator is cooled by means of a fluid coolant flowing around the outside of the insulator at the remote end of the insulator, away from the cathode. The coolant conduit can be formed by flange rings, soldered directly on to the surface of the insulator, and the conduit may be shaped such that the coolant is in direct contact with the insulator. A method for manufacturing the device is also described.

Conventionally, the magnetic field generator 4 was arranged perpendicularly to the axis O of the electron beam B. The magnetic field generator 4 of this invention is arranged so as to be inclined relative to the axis V perpendicular to the axis O of the electron beam B. Specifically, the magnetic field generator 4 is arranged so as to be inclined relative to the axis V perpendicular to the axis O of the electron beam B within the range in the cathode 2 side from the focused and deflected electron beam B. Inclination up to the anode 5 side opposite to the cathode 2 side will lead to a possibility of increasing the reduced X-ray source diameter. Thus, arranging the magnetic field generator 4 so as to be inclined within the range in the cathode side from the electron beam B may reduce the X-ray source diameter.

Disclosed is an x-ray tube (1), comprising a cathode (10), an anode target (20) that discharges x-rays, a vacuum chamber (30), and a cooling mechanism (60), wherein the heat emitted by the anode target is cooled by the cooling mechanism, and the heat emitted by the cathode is cooled by the cooling mechanism via a ceramic member (33), a second metallic member (32), a heat transfer medium (50), an adapter (40), and a first metallic member (31). It is thus possibly to simultaneously cool both the anode target and the cathode with a single cooling mechanism, and to disperse heat externally with a simple structure.
