The invention concerns a device for protecting a site (10) against the impact of lightning. The device comprises: means (12, 16) for detecting a lightning discharge approaching towards the site; at least one lightning arrester (36) and means (26) for forming in the air, in the neighbourhood of the said site (10) an ionised channel (32) to direct the lightning electric discharge towards the lightning arrester (36), the means (26) for forming the ionised channel being monitored by the detecting means (12, 16). The invention is useful for protecting a site sensitive to lightning impact.

The measurement is obtained by means of a self-contained magnetic circuit (2) around the earthing line, and an electrical circuit with a winding (5) provided around the magnetic circuit so that a lightning current flowing through the earthing line generates an induced current in said winding, said magnetic circuit comprising a solid magnetic core (3) with at least one break in the magnetic circuit, which break is filled with a non-magnetic material.

Eine Führung (4) endet in einer mit einer durchsichtigen Scheibe (6) abgedeckten Tasche (5). Am Metallstab (1) haftet ein Magnet (7). Der Metallstab (1) ist mit einer Blitzschutzanlage verbunden, so daß bei einem Einschlag durch ihn Strom fließt. Der Magnet (7) fällt dann ab und fällt in die Tasche (5), wo er sichtbar ist.

A fault-tolerant self-indicating surge protector system (500) and methods (800, 900) are presented. An unwanted surge of electrical energy induced by a lightning strike is directed away from a sensitive electrical or electronic component, and the unwanted surge of electrical energy is directed through series connected pairs of varistors. A voltage signal is extracted from a center tap point between the series connected pairs of the varistors, and the voltage signal is monitored for a health of the varistors. A high impedance in a varistor among the varistors is provided for a low voltage across the varistor, and a low impedance in the varistor is provided and the unwanted surge of electrical energy is diverted through the varistor in response to a high voltage across the varistor.
