The present invention discloses a volume adjustment method and apparatus, and a terminal. After a sound signal surrounding a user terminal is collected, analysis is performed on the collected sound signal, so as to obtain composition information of the sound signal, where the composition information includes sound types included in the sound signal and proportions of sounds of the various types, and the sound types include blank sound, human sound, and noise; a current scene mode of the user terminal is determined according to the composition information of the sound signal; and volume of the user terminal is adjusted according to the determined scene mode. When a current scene mode of a user terminal is determined, because reference of composition information in a sound signal is added, a corresponding current scenario is closer to a real scenario, and can more precisely match a situation in which a user is located, thereby significantly reducing occurrence of a case, caused by mistaken determining of the scenario, in which play volume adjustment does not conform to the scenario, and enhancing user experience.

A telephone has a receiver, a transmitter, a control interface, an audio processor and a microprocessor. The audio processor includes a digital signal processor, an input audio unit coupled to a microphone, an output audio unit coupled to a speaker, and a ring signal controller coupled to a transducer/ringer. When an incoming call is received, the audio processor samples the microphone input signal, which is indicative of ambient noise, and performs a spectral analysis of the ambient noise. The audio processor then sets the ring frequency and the ring volume responsive to the ambient noise spectrum and the ring volume control level set by the user.

Many devices are configured to present alerts notifying a user of device events, but the user may not notice the alert due to a noisy environment. A user may mitigate missed alerts by increasing the alert volume or choosing a vibration mode, but such techniques depend upon the knowledge, attention, and memory of the user to adjust the device before the alert. Instead, a device may compare the noise level of the environment with a noise level threshold. If the noise level is below the threshold, the device presents the alert; but if the noise level is above the threshold, the device defers the presentation of the alert until the noise level diminishes below the threshold, and then presents the alert. The device may also send an automated response to the message, notifying a sender that the user may return the message upon leaving the noisy environment.
