An image forming apparatus includes a light source; an optical shutter unit (11) comprising a pair of parallel substrates respectively having a plurality of scanning electrodes (11a) and a plurality of data electrodes (11b) disposed to intersect with each other to form a matrix electrode structure on their opposite surfaces, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between the pair of substrates so as to form a microshutter at each intersection of the scanning electrodes and data electrodes; an optical system for forming an image at a desired position with light transmitted through the optical shutter unit; a photosensitive member as a medium for recording the thus formed image; a scanning side drive circuit (12) for applying a scanning voltage signal to the plurality of scanning electrodes (11a) so as to sequentially select at least one scanning electrode in a prescribed cycle; and a data side drive unit (13) for applying data voltage signals to the plurality of data electrodes (11b) in synchronism with said scanning voltage signal. Image data are transferred on the optical shutter unit (11) corresponding to the movement of the photosensitive member so as to move an image formed thereby on the photosensitive member while keeping the relative position of the image with respect to the photosensitive member.

Für die Rasterpunkte an den r1 Positionen aller Teilflächen A1, B1, C1, ...werden gleichzeitig in einem ersten Zeitabschnitt die Bildelemente an den p1 Positionen aller Teilflächen A1', B1', C1',... aufgezeichnet; in nachfolgenden Zeitabschnitten folgen die Bildelemente an den p2 Positionen für die Rasterpunkte an den r2 Positionen etc. Die Aufzeichnung wird computerprogrammgesteuert durch eine Matrix 1 lichtsteuernder Elemente LA1, LB1, LC1, .., eine Lochmatrix 2, eine Verschiebeeinrichtung 3 und ein aufzeichnungsmaßstab- bestimmendes Objektiv 4 bewirkt. A laser beam scanner (53) is provided to project a laser beam onto the surface of an electrically charged image carrier (5). The laser scanner (53) has a semiconductor laser array (21) equipped with a plurality of light-emitting portions (21a) and a rotary polygonal mirror (3) that deflects the laser beam from the light-emitting portions (21a) toward the image carrier (5). The light-emitting portions (21a) are two-dimensionally arranged on the surface of the semiconductor laser array. The light-emitting portions (21a) are individually controlled for their turn-on and quantity of light by a controller (60). There is thus provided a high-speed and high-resolution laser beam scanner that has a low scanning frequency and a short optical path.
