A method of buffering segments of encoded data at a decoder or client device where the segments of data have been encoded using a scalable video coding (SVC) scheme comprising base layer segments and one or more enhancement layer segments. The base layer segments are decodable to a base level of reproduction quality and the enhancement layer segments, together with the base layer segments, are decodable to an enhanced level of reproduction quality. The client device/decoder initially sets a prescribed time period, P, which can be related to a playback time of each data segment or the amount of data in each segment. It then proceeds to buffer a base layer segment, 310-0, together with as much of the enhancement layer segment as possible, 310-1, 310-2, within the set prescribed time period. The buffered base layer segment and what is received of the enhancement layer segment is then decoded and output.

The exemplary embodiments of this invention provide in one aspect thereof an ability to signal multiple decoding times for each sample in a file format level in order to allow, for example, different decoding times for each sample (or sample subset) between decoding an entire stream and decoding a subset of the stream. An alternate decoding time box is specified to allow for the signaling of multiple decoding times for each sample. Such a box can contain a compact version of a table that allows indexing from an alternate decoding time to a sample number, where an alternate decoding time is a decoding time to be used with a sample when only a subset of an elementary stream stored in a track is to be decoded. Furthermore, each entry in the table provides the number of consecutive samples with the same time delta, and the delta between those consecutive samples. By adding the deltas a complete time-to-sample map can be constructed.

An image transmission unit (150) is provided with a selection unit which selects a part of unprocessed images as a specified area, and selects one of the multiple reduced images as a designated reduced image. A method comprises receiving a multimedia content stream comprising a series of segments, each segment corresponding to a respective predicted seek position of a plurality of predicted seek positions in the multimedia content stream, determining a likelihood of receiving a seek request from a user to move from a current playout position in the multimedia content stream to one of the predicted seek positions in the multimedia content stream, and determining, by a processor, a size of a buffer for each segment in the multimedia content stream based on the likelihood of receiving the seek request.
