Embodiments of the present invention disclose a co-channel dual polarized microwave device and a method for receiving a receive signal. Frame synchronization is performed on a first receive signal processed by cross polarization interference cancellation and phase noise immunization is performed on the first receive signal processed by frame synchronization. Frame synchronization is performed on a second receive signal not processed by cross polarization interference cancellation and phase noise immunization is performed on the second receive signal processed by frame synchronization. The first receive signal processed by phase noise immunization and the second receive signal processed by phase noise immunization are selectively received according to a frame synchronization state signal and a signal quality signal. Delay alignment is performed on a selectively received signal according to the frame synchronization state signal to implement lossless switching in a selective receiving process. If a cross polarization interference cancellation error occurs due to a microwave device fault, a microwave device selectively receives the receive signal not processed by cross polarization interference cancellation and performs delay alignment, thereby implementing lossless switching in the selective receiving process.

Provided is a mobile cellular communication system or, more particularly, a transmission diversity communication system in which when the number of transmitting antennas is increased, antennas can be calibrated readily and efficiently with power saved without degradation of the characteristic concerning fading. The transmission diversity communication system is a closed-loop transmission diversity communication system. In the transmission diversity communication system, a base station transmits common pilot signals via a plurality of antennas, and a mobile station receives the common pilot signals. The mobile station transmits feedback signals, which are produced through analysis of the common pilot signals, to the base station. The base station controls a downward transmission signal on the basis of the pieces of feedback information. Herein, the plurality of antennas is divided into a plurality of groups. The common pilot signal is transmitted via a reference antenna included in each of the groups. The common pilot signal is alternately transmitted at a low frequency via the other antennas.

Channel estimation is performed in a mobile communications system. In order to reduce the computational load, and thereby decrease power consumption, a polynomial expression is used to approximate a Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) based channel estimator with respect to Doppler and SIR variations. A lookup table may be used to supply coefficients for the polynomial expression. In another aspect of the invention, coefficients for the polynomial expression may, themselves, be approximated by a second polynomial expression.

An equalizer (10) employed with a receiver (50) for cancelling an interfering signal due to low cross polarization isolation uses an error signal generated in an adaptive baseband equalizer (16) to determine the magnitude of an interfering signal and inputs a cancelling signal to the co-polarized channel until power in the error signal derived from the adaptive baseband equalizer (16) is minimized. The determination of the magnitude of the interfering signal is performed at baseband (after demodulation but prior to data detection) and the cancellation is performed at RF, prior to dispersive microwave elements. The co- and cross-polarized signals are received and amplified (11). A copy of the cross channel input signal is supplied to each receiver channel (51,52). An RF vector modulator (20) is used to control the phase and amplitude of the cross-polarized signal prior to summation with a desired co-polarized signal. A control logic circuit (35) sets the phase and amplitude for the vector modulator (20) to minimize the magnitude of the error signal by stepping the setting of the vector modulator (20) by one unit and sampling the power in the error signal. If the power is reduced the vector modulator (20) is stepped again in the same direction. If the power is increased the vector modulator (20) is stepped in the opposite direction.

An active antenna system which has a plurality of antenna elements arranged in a column with each element or subarray of elements integrated with an amplifier and other beam forming components. A separate amplifier and filter are disposed immediately adjacent and connected to each of the antenna elements or a subarray of antenna elements and a separate combiner/divider is connected to each of the amplifiers. The antenna elements, amplifier and filter are disposed on a common support. A base station is connected by the feed cables and is remote from each amplifier. A first group of the antenna elements with low power amplifiers forms a transmitting antenna system and/or a second group of the active antenna elements with low noise amplifiers forms a receiving antenna system. A variable attenuator and a variable phase shift circuit can be integrated with each amplifier and can be used for beam shaping and electronic beam pointing. For diversity combining, spatially separated or polarization diverse active antennas are used. For polarization diverse active antennas, implementation involves a shared column or two colocated orthogonally polarized columns.
