A coarse singulator includes cascaded ramped conveyors (102-105). A detection system (60A) for monitoring the stream of articles (64) and identifying and/or tracking individual articles passing through the system in conjunction with a fine singulator such as a chevron conveyor (54). A control system (65) regulates the flow of articles by diverting doubles or clusters for separations. A divert apparatus (99) which can be provided for diverting oversize/overweight articles or unwanted clusters of unsingulated articles.

The guide arm (C) is pivotally mounted and has a second recess or aperture (C2) for actuating said pin (A3) and a locking-arm actuating guide pin (C3) for co-action with a camming surface (B2) on the locking arm (B).

The disclosed sorting system includes a plurality of carriages (23) movable under the control of a programmable controller (60) between the loading (20) and unloading (30) stations of the sorting system (10), each carriage (23) carrying a tilt tray (25). The geographic destination of each of the objects to be placed on a tray, as well as a dimension of each of the objects to be placed on a tray, is determined by an optical scanner (45) and a measuring device (50). The controller uses the dimension information to determine whether more than one object having the same geographic destination may be placed on the same tray. The invention is adaptable for use with other types of sorting systems.
