A load support system (10) is provided including a flexible frame unit (18) attached to a shoulder support structure (16) and to a hip belt assembly (20). The frame (18) is pivotally attached to the hip belt assembly (20) and is held in a slightly bowed configuration, whereby the load is transferred from the frame (18) to the hip belt assembly (20) through pivot pins (76, 78) and a venting space is created between the frame (18) and a user's back. The shoulder support structure (16) preferably includes a pair of independently positionable shoulder straps (24, 26) that are removably attached to the frame (18). The hip belt assembly (20) preferably includes a load support belt (18) that may be coupled to the frame (18), and a hip pad (84) coupled to the load support belt (82) via a hook and loop fastening system. The load support system (10) may be used to support backpacks, and the like, or may be adapted for other applications including Scuba tanks support. The load support system (10) may be adjusted independently of the load and affords considerable freedom of movement when worn, due particularly to the pivotal attachment of the hip belt assembly (20) to the frame (18) and to the form of the flexible frame (18).

When the device is applied to a harness, the frame member 11 lies parallel to a back plate of the harness or is constituted by the back plate of the harness. Thus, when the cylinder clamp 12 is in the retaining position a cylinder can be retained securely to the frame member and sliding of the cylinder relative to the frame member (hence, back plate) can be prevented. A buoyancy compensator insertable backpack (10) is disclosed herein in the form of a configured insert having an inverted T conformation. The inverted T conformation has an upright portion with ribs (12) thereon which provide rigidity to the upright and includes at least one set of slits (20,22,24,26) therethrough in order to secure a breathing gas tank (100) by a metal (102,104) band passing therethrough and around the tank. The lower or transverse (14,16,18) portion of the inverted T shaped backpack is curved to follow the contour of a person's torso so that support can be provided to the upright portion by having a load distributed across a person's torso in the pelvis, small area of the back, or hip area. The entire insertable backpack (10) is implaced with a buoyancy compensator (52) so as to provide for support of a breathing gas tank (100) on the backpack within the buoyancy compensator, all of which are secured on a user's body for providing buoyancy compensation and attendant support of a breathing gas tank.
