Measuring the filling level by means of devices known in prior art which make use of the total reflection of light on reflecting surfaces of fiber optic bodies immersed in the fluid can be distorted by drops or splashes attached to reflecting surfaces that are not immersed. Disclosed are a method and a device according to which the light reflected by each reflecting surface is measured separately. The measuring signals for determining the filling level are preferably subjected to a plausibility check so as to detect and eliminate measuring distortions and errors. The inventive method and device can be used to determine the filling level of fluid-filled containers, particularly receptacles containing fuel, wash water, oil, a hydraulic fluid, etc. in motor vehicles.
