The measuring signals for determining the filling level are preferably subjected to a plausibility check so as to detect and eliminate measuring distortions and errors. The inventive method and device can be used to determine the filling level of fluid-filled containers, particularly receptacles containing fuel, wash water, oil, a hydraulic fluid, etc. in motor vehicles.
