A group of fixtures for thin-walled shell/cylindrical components (10) while they are being machined internally and externally, has a mounting base (1 ) having mounting holes, positioning pins and clamps to locate one end of the thin-walled component. A supporting arbour or cylinder (5) is fixed in the base. A circular lid (12) is fixed to the supporting arbour or cylinder and has a wedged step to locate the other end of the cylindrical component for internal and external machining, or the major open end of shell component for internal machining. A pair of modified vehicle wheel inner tubes (8) are disposed around the supporting arbour or cylinder. A multi-layered sacrificial liner (7) surrounds the pressure element and is adapted to fit between it and the thin-walled components. When properly inflated according to the design and validation procedure, the fixture adaptively holds the thin-walled components for machining, with sufficient supporting rigidity and dynamic stability, so as to maintain the machining precision and surface finish to an acceptable engineering standard. Furthermore, a reasonable and practical design and validation procedure is supplied, easily adapted to different sized thin-walled shell/cylindrical components.

Zwischen der Schneide (S) und der Druckkammer (DK) verbleibt eine Schneidenträgerwand (W), die bei Druckbeaufschlagung des Druckübertragungsmittels zur Einstellung der Schneidenlage elastisch verformbar ist.

The fixture (100) also includes an inflatable pressure element (8) which, in use, is positioned within the secured component (10) and is adapted to press outwardly, when inflated, against a liner (6) inserted between the pressure element (8) and the inner thin wall of the component (10). The liner (6) has one or more elastic members, which bias it against the outward expansion of the inflated pressure element (8). The inflated pressure element (8) and the liner (6) damp vibrations in the component (10) during machining of the outer side of the thin wall.

The invention relates to an adjustable fastening device e.g. for an axially-shaped, tubular, flat or spherical tool or working piece or machine part or a like of a desired shape. The device includes: a body section (1), a clamping means (2), mounted within the body section (1) and at least partly pressable/squeezable indirectly or directly against a piece (10) to be fastened. Between the body section (1) and the clamping is provided a space (3), which is pregreased for a medium effecting said pressing/squeezing. The medium comprises in situ cast elastomer (5) whereby, upon the application of pressure on elastomer by means of a screw, a piston or the like, said elastomer (5) delivers by way of its displacement and/or deformation said pressure to clamping means (2) which thus presses/squeezes against a piece (10) to be fastened and, upon releasing said pressure, the elastomer (5) returns to its initial state.
