There is disclosed a system for dispensing feed and water for livestock which includes a container (24) arranged to receive the feed and water and is adapted to permit access to the feed and the water by the livestock for consumption. The system further includes a feed delivery means (34) for dispensing feed into the container (24) and water dispensing means (36) for dispensing water into the container means (24). The water dispensing means (36) includes a delivery portion (90) extending into the container (24) which houses a water level sensor (104). A control means (120, 122, 124) is arranged to actuate the feed delivery means (34) to dispense a controlled amount of feed into the container (24) and is also arranged to actuate the water dispensing means (36) to dis- p ense water into the container (24) through the delivery portion (90) after actuation. The water level sensor (104) within the delivery portion (90) disables the water dispensing means (36) after a predetermined level of water within the container (24) is reached and the delivery portion (90) is arranged within the container (24) for washing residual feed within the con tamer (24) from the delivery portion (90) to thereby preclude interference or clogging of the delivery portion (90) and the water level sensor (104) by the residual feed.

A self feeder for livestock comprises a base member having a surface for receiving feed thereon and a hopper positioned thereabove. The hopper is adapted for containing feed therein and has a bottom with an aperture for allowing feed to flow therethrough and into the base member receptacle. A plurality of hopper support members are each connected respectively to the base member and the hopper and are also adapted for separating feeding animals. A feed wheel rotatably mounted in the receptacle includes an upright member rotatably mounted in the receptacle. The upright member extends through the hopper bottom aperture with upper and lower portions respectively above and below the level of the hopper bottom. An agitating rod extends from the upright member upper portion for agitating feed within the hopper as the feed wheel is rotated. The feed wheel lower portion includes a spoke extending from the upright member which is movable by an animal to rotate the feed wheel. The spoke is also adapted for engaging a quantity of feed in the receptacle whereby rotation of the feed wheel is resisted.

Gegenstand der Erfindung ist eine Selbstfütteranlage zum Verfüttern von pulverartigem Futter bei der Kleintierhal tung in Käfigen, insbesondere von Nagetieren in Laboratorien, die einen an die Seitenwand (17) des Käfigs anschließbaren und oben offenen Futtervorratsraum (1) aufweist. Der Futter vorratsraum (1) ist von einem sich nach unten erweiternden Mantel (2) umgrenzt und unten mit einer Bodenplatte (4) abge schlossen. In den Futtervorratsraum (1) ragt eine Leitplatte (7), die als sich nach unten erweiternder Kegelmantelabschnitt ausgebildet ist, dessen Kegelwinkel (α) kleiner als der Kegel winkel (β) des Mantels (2) ist. Diese Leitplatte (7) begrenzt einen für ein Tier bestimmten Fütterungsraum (6), der mit einer Schwelle (9) mit nach innen abgewinkelter Oberkante verse hen ist. Form und Abmessungen des Fütterungsraumes rich ten sich nach den Kopfmaßen des jeweiligen Tieres. Außerdem können vor dem Fütterungsraum (16) ein mit Fußgitter (13) und Schutzgitter (16) versehener Futtersammelraum (11) und in dem Fütterungsraum (6) das Tretelement (19) eines die Ge wölbe- bzw. The disclosed system comprises one or more stationary dispensers associated with drinking fountains for farm animals, for dispensing predetermined doses of drugs or nutrients, operating in cooperation with a plurality of portable units constructed for individual animals. The portable units are designed to interact electronically with a stationary dispenser to control the amount and timing of the doses. The stationary dispenser includes in circuit relation, an interrogator-transmitter, a reply receiver, and a liquid dispenser responsive to the reply receiver. Each portable system comprises a coded passive transponder, a timer, and a memory element. When an animal comes within range of the stationary dispenser, its portable transponder is interrogated. A coded reply is sent by the animal's transponder indicating whether animal has received a dose within a preceding preselected time interval. If a positive reply is received by the stationary dispenser circuit, no further action is taken. The animal may drink but no dose of medication or nutrient will be dispensed. If a negative reply is received, then the dispenser valve is enabled, releasing the desired pre-measured dose if the animal drinks. Operation of the dispenser valve also causes a coded signal to be transmitted from the interrogator-transmitter to the animal's portable unit setting a memory element, indicating that the animal has received the required dose, and initiating the running of the preselected time period, after elapse of which, the memory element is reset for enabling the next dosage.
