This invention concerns an active reconfigurable stretch forming tool, and in another aspect the invention is a method of stretch forming. The tool comprises an array of extensible shape forming elements which are driven in extension to produce the same force per unit area across a workpiece during shape forming. An array of limit switches are located in front of the array of shape forming elements, such that each shape forming element is driven in extension towards a respective limit switch during shape forming. In use, each limit switch is activated by the workpiece as it is shaped and each switch, upon activation, prevents further extension of the respective driven element. The tool and method are useful in the forming of three dimensional shapes in solid sheet metal or mesh, to produce panels for reflector antennas.

Aluminium panels curved in mutually orthogonal x, y and z dimensions are made by stretch forming. A former (34) for use in this process comprises a plurality of steel bars (60) extending generally in the y direction and mutually spaced apart in the x direction. The bars (60) are held in side rails (62) and (64), which are formed with holes (66) to receive the bars (60), and flexed over an intermediate rail (68). Thus each bar (60) is curved in a yz plane. The holes (66) and the seats for the bars on the intermediate rail (68) each lie on a curve in an xz plane. So located, the bars (60) combine to define an envelope which is curved in mutually orthogonal x, y and z dimensions. When an aluminium sheet is stretched over the former (34), it takes up the shape of this envelope. The invention also relates to a method of forming from sheet material a curved panel.

A die assembly for draw stamping sheet metal in a press has an upper die structure and a lower die structure, each constructed and arranged to be mounted on a press for reciprocal movement therebetween. The upper die structure and the lower die structure have complementary stamping surfaces for stamping sheet metal to a desired configuration. A clamping assembly and a stretching assembly grip the sheet metal along opposite sides of the complementary stamping surfaces and drivingly move apart pre-stretching the sheet metal as the upper die structure and the lower die structure are closed to stamp the sheet metal to the desired configuration.

Beschrieben wird ein Streckbiegeverfahren zur Biegung von Hohlprofilen und die entsprechende Profildorn-Streckbiegemaschine, wobei das Verfahren vorsieht, daß das Hohlprofil symmetrisch von beiden Seiten her von den Enden ausgehend gleichzeitig in X-Y-Richtung unter Vorspannung gebogen wird, wobei das jeweilige Biegewerkzeug feststeht und das Hohlprofil in X-Y-Richtung mit einer verfahrbaren Einspannstelle um das Biegewerkzeug gebogen wird, wobei die Einspannstelle zusätzlich auch in Torsions-Richtung verschwenkbar ausgebildet ist. Das Hohlprofil kann nach einem weiteren Verfahren auch um eine Biegeschablone gebogen werden. Ein zusätzliches Verfahren sieht vor, daß das Hohlprofil von den Enden her auf Kernwerkzeuge aufgewickelt wird und zusätzlich ein Preßstempel auf die Längsrichtung des Hohlprofils wirkt.

Contoured shapes, especially elongated saddle-section shapes such as helicopter rotor blade erosion shields, are formed from a sheet metal workpiece by providing the workpiece with lateral flange portions that are engaged with respective lateral tools movable in synchronism adjacent to the flanks of an elongate male tool so as to draw the workpiece, by its flange portions, over the male tool and into contiguity therewith. The lateral tools may cooperate with gripper means to grip the flange portions and facilitate stretch-forming. Apparatus for performing this method is also disclosed.
