Porous articles of manufacture are produced by mixing a dry particulate material with a polymeric material, the dry particulate material being insoluble and unreactive with the polymeric material. The mixture is preplasticized to form a composite which isthenshaped by a molding technique forming a dense skin (14) on the surface (12) ofthearticle. Asolvent is then added to dissolve the dry particulate material. Below the skin (14), punctuated by a series of very small openings (16), exists an open polymeric network (18) which can be filled with liquids such as inks to produce self-metering pads. Blowing agents can also be included to increase the resiliency of the finished article. Photopolymeric substances can also be employed to achieve desirable surfact pattern characteristics.

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing high-accuracy printing plates, and to a printing plate. The printing plate is manufactured by depositing a layer of substance (13) onto a base plate (11) which is coated with a patterned resist layer (12). The resist layer (12) can be further processed by means of laser. After the layer of substance (13) has been formed, the base plate (11) and the resist (12) are removed, the layer of substance (13) thus forming the printing plate, the pattern left by the resist (12) forming the printing pattern of the plate.

After the insertion of coins is detected by a coin detecting unit (10), the image data of a pattern example corresponding to the size of the stamping surface is read out of a memory unit (2) in response to the operation, the pattern of the stamping surface is edited by an image processing unit (13) while the read image data is displayed on a display unit (8) and, in accordance with the obtained picture pattern, the stamping surface of an uncompleted stamp is formed.

According to the present invention there are provided method and apparatus for producing a simple printing plate having open cells, which method and apparatus area simple in construction and permit accurate and continuous production of the printing plate. More specifically, as the method there is provided a method of producing a simple printing plate having open cells by pressing both an embossing member having a relief image (T) and a to-be-embossed member (W) which is a sheet having open cells, in a heated state of the embossing member, allowing the relief image to be transferred to the to-be-embossed member, characterized in that the embossing member is attached to an embossing cylinder (3), the to-be-embossed member is attached to a to-be-embossed cylinder (2), one or both of the embossing cylinder and the to-be-embossed cylinder being in an arcuate form, and both cylinders are rotated in synchronism with each other, thereby pressing the embossing member and the to-be-embossed member in a rolling fashion.

The method comprises the steps of placing a microporous marking structure (38) in conjunction with an absorbent material (42) within a stabilizing device (10). A positive pressure is then applied to the microporous marking structure (38) within the stabilizing device (10) until a sufficient amount of ink originally retained within the microporous marking structure (38) is forced to flow therefrom into the absorbent material (42) so that the microporous marking structure (38) obtains a substantially stabilized state.
