A matrix printer comprises a printing head which includes a plurality of printing needles (11) each having a respective electromagnetic maneuvering device (10) by means of which the needle, carried by a spring-biassed, movable armature (12), can be caused to carry out a working cycle, which includes a working stroke and a subsequent return stroke. The maneuvering device (10) is activated by temporarily lowering the magnetomotive force in the magnetic circuit (12,14) of the device from a previous, constant value. The previously attracted armature (12) will herewith commence to move in a direction away from the stationary part (14) of the magnetic circuit as a result of the spring force acting on the armature. The magnetomotive force is then caused to return to its previous value. For the purpose of reducing the noise and wear generated by the armature (12) and to reduce the tendency of the armature to rebound, the armature is slowed down during the final stage of its return stroke, by again lowering the magnetomotive force temporarily for a limited part of the time taken to effect the return stroke.

The ratchet drive can be controlled by at least one light barrier (11, 12), which can be switched according to the position of the ratchet wheel. The ratchet wheel can thereby be brought into a specified starting position at any time. If several ratchet wheels are arranged parallel to each other on a rotational axis, each ratchet wheel can be rotated and controlled independently by means of the associated ratchet.

The selector device for a character-carrying element of a printing machine comprises a d.c. electric motor (136) whose rotor is capable of selectively rotating in either direction a coupling arrangement comprising a pinion (143) on the motor shaft (142) and a gear (123) on the shaft (76) which carries the hub (75) for mounting a daisywheel printing element and a strobe disc (122) which provides the position signals used to control character selection. A device for taking up clearances minimises the radial clearances between the pinion (143) and the gear (123). Thus the motor (136) is mounted in trunnions (139) and urged by a spring (144) to tilt in the sense urging the pinion (143) into the gear (123).

A cancellor for tickets or the like comprising a number of wheels (8) being rotatably mounted on a common shaft (7) and individually settable in locked positions (10) each corresponding to a position of types disposed on the wheels for the printing of characters on a ticket or the like. Each wheel (8) has in each locked position (10) at least one zero position (17) corresponding to said locked position. The zero positions of each wheel are located at the same distance from the centre of the wheel. Each zero position in the respective locked position permits free passage for a sensing means (18,19). Furthermore, for determining the position of each wheel, a code position (20, 21 ) is disposed on the wheel between each pair of adjacent zero positions, so that when rotating the wheel to be set between two adjacent locked positions, one of said code positions (20, 21) passes by said sensing means.
