A number of circumferentially spaced baffles (13) are provided at the inner side of the cap (5). These baffles (13) extend upwardly from the lower side of the cap (5) to the top wall 6 and extend over a distance radially. The cap (5) may have a side wall (7) with a lower edge extending vertically downwards or inwards. Other embodiments of the cap (5) are specifically adapted for use in an installation for treating waste water, in which the apparatus serves also for bringing the liquid into circulation.

A hydraulically powered mixing aerator rides on an upright beam member for submersion in a body of water such as an equalization basin, oxidation ditch or sludge holding tank used in sewage treatment plants. The aerator employs a submersible, hydraulically powered mixing motor driving a propeller which is mounted on the beam member by a slidable bracket for height ajdustment. The beam member is swingably supported to allow adjustment of the vertical plane angle. Because the beam member is also mounted for rotation, substantially any attitude or position of the mixer can be selected for creating an efficient flow pattern within the body of water. The speed at which the propeller is rotated, and therefore, the rate at which the water is circulated and aerated, is selectively adjustable. The hydraulically driven motor provides for a low speed and high torque rotation of the propeller without the use of a reduction gear.

A modified activated sludge system is provided wherein wastewater containing BOD 5 and phosphate values is admixed in an initial zone with biomass-containing recycled sludge to form a mixed liquor under conditions effecting sorption of BOD. in the biomass. Subsequently, said mixed liquor is subjected to aeration in an oxidation zone under conditions for effecting oxidation of BOD., such that oxidizing agent is incorporated into the oxidation zone at a rate not substantially exceeding the rate of oxidation. By such operation, considerable savings in power requirements for oxygen transferto the mixed liquid are had, while developing and maintaining a dense non-bulking biomass having the properties of good removal of phosphate from the wastewater influent.

Behan deltes Abwasser und gegebenenfalls freier Schlamm werden über eine Ableitung (4, 14) unter Zurückhaltung der Trägerteil chen mit Hilfe von Rückhalteeinrichtungen (5, 15) aus dem Becken 1 abgezogen. Über den Strömungsweg des Abwas ser-Schlamm-Gemisches wird eine weitgehende Trägerteil chenverteilung aufrechterhalten. Zur Verbesserung der Gleichverteilung der Trägerteilchen über die Beckenlänge ist vorgesehen, das Abwasser und den Schlamm an beiden End bereichen und/oder im mittleren Bereich des Beckens 1 über entsprechende Anschlüsse (2a, 12a, 2b); (3a, 13a, 3b) zuzulei ten und behandeltes Abwasser sowie gegebenenfalls freien Schlamm zumindest teilweise im mittleren Bereich und/oder an beiden Endbereichen des Beckens 1 abzuleiten.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum biologischen Abbau organischer Schmutzfrachten in hochkonzentrierten Abwässern mit Hilfe frei suspendierter Bakterien, das da durch gekennzeichnet ist, daß man den Abbau bei einem konstanten Redoxpotential (E) im Bereich von -200 bis -350 mV, einem konstanten pH-Wert zwischen 7,0 und 9,0 und bei einer annähernd konstanten hydraulischen Reten tionszeit durchführt. Es wird ein Abbaugrad von über 90% erreicht.
