Using a smoke generator, it is possible to determine flows in gaseous media. Smoke generators of a pyrotechnic composition are presently available. It is desirable that it should be possible to turn off the smoke generator when it has fulfilled the purpose for which it is being used. With pyrotechnic smoke generators, this requires water. This is a disadvantage. The present invention overcomes this by using a relatively thick thread that can be ignited at one end. On ignition, a flame is formed. When the flame is blown out, smoke is generated. Where said thread functions in conjunction with a sleeve (labelled "7" in the accompanying figures), smoke generation can be terminated by fully withdrawing the smoke generating end into the sleeve. This results in total extinction of said end.

The invention relates to a smoke composition comprising between 0.05 and 5 % of one or more active ingredients, for an effective dose of active ingredient(s) of between 0.5 mg/m and 40 mg/m , and a smoke base. According to the invention, the aforementioned smoke base comprises at least one oxidising agent, one reducing agent and one mineral filler. The mineral filler represents at least 25 % of the weight of the base while the reducing agent represents at most 16 % of the weight thereof, and the weight ratio of oxidising agent to reducing agent is at least 3/1.

The invention relates to a pyrotechnic smoke screen unit for producing an aerosol which is impenetrable in the visible, infrared and millimetric wave range and used for camouflage and decoy purposes. The units are obtained by combining fibre-like conductive dipoles or dipole precursors which become conductive in situ and conventional pyrotechnic smoke substances active in the visible and infrared range.
