Secondary and tertiary aralkylamines can be prepared with good yield and selectivity by reacting an aromatic vinylic olefin, a nitrogen-containing compound, and synthesis gas comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen (or in an alternative embodiment, CO and H 2 0), in the presence of a catalyst comprising a ruthenium-containing compound and an amide solvent at a temperature of at least 100°C and a pressure of at least 1.45 MPa. Linear products are obtained preferentially under these conditions, but when a quarternary phosphonium compound is added, branched products are also obtained in good yields.

The invention relates to alkylated diamine compounds having the formula where R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 , which may be the same or different, are selected from hydrogen and from alkyl groups containing from 8 to 30 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is not hydrogen, and where p is an integer in the range 2 to 12. In preferred embodiments one or more of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are long chain alkyl groups containing 13 or 15 carbon atoms, the amount of branching being in the range 30 to 70%, and the integer p is 6. The alkylated diamine compounds are conveniently prepared by reaction of one or more aldehydes R.CHO where R is R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and or R 4 with an α,w diamine and the compounds may be used for example as bitumen adhesion agents.
