Cold-rolled steel purlins have parallel oppositely directed flanges, one major (3) and one minor (1) with a flat outer fixing surface, terminal inturned lip (4, 9) and longitudinal strenghthening groove (8, 13) nearer the inner edge where a central connecting web (2) joints at 90° (14, 16) but is so angled in central regions that a notional plane at right-angles to each flange flat surface longitudinal midline passas through the web and the other flange flat surface. The minor flange outer contour matches the major flange inner contour. The flange lips (4, 9) are angled at least in part at less than 90°. The purlin has good mechanical properties, and can be nested in pairs (with minor flanges inside major flanges) or stacked in the same sense either as individuals or as nested pairs (Figure 1).

A channel-section structural member 1 for use as the bottom plate of a galvanised steel building frame comprises a central web 2 and two parallel flanges 8 and 10 extending along opposite edges of the web 2 to form a channel. Two ribs 4 and 6 are provided in the web 2 for supporting the ends of upright structural members within the channel in such a manner as to allow a gap for drainage of moisture along the channel. Drainage holes 12 are provided in the structural member 1 so as to enable moisture to drain out of the channel at points intermediate the two ends of the structural member 1, thereby minimising the risk of accumulated moisture resulting in corrosion of the structural member over a period of time.

An elongated sheet metal panel (96) comprising a first portion including a major central portion (96A) having transverse corrugations formed therein to a depth of at least about 0.100 inch, a transition portion (96B) adjacent said first portion, and at least one marginal edge portion (96C) which has a configuration which is either uncorrugated or has longitudinal corrugations or relatively light transverse corrugations therein. A method for forming the above-described elongated sheet metal panel comprises passing the panel through a corrugation roll assembly (40), a tension roll assembly (50) downstream of the corrugation roll assembly. A power transmitting arrangement (90) simultaneously drives the corrugation roll assembly and the tension roll assembly at different rotational velocities to provide a pulling force on said sheet metal panel. An edge roll subassembly (45A, 46A including a resilient mounting arrangement (103, 104, 105) which urges the edge rolls resiliently toward each other to hold portions of the edge panel section therebetween, thereby causing an inward drawing of metal from the edge panel section into the corrugated panel section for equalizing the overall lengths of the two sections. Structural joints between such panels and methods of forming such joints are also disclosed.

A panel support assembly is disclosed for use in concealed fastener roof systems. An array of rows and columns of support assemblies can be erected in a manner which facilitates 'moduling' of the panel members to conform the panel coverage to that required by the steel framing. In each row, means is provided for incrementally increasing or decreasing a selected modular distance between fixes clip means of adjacent support assemblies thereby to accommodate differences between the 'as engineered' dimensions and the 'as built' dimensions of the steel framing. An improved roof structure is disclosed utilizing rows of fixing, clipping, and sliding support assemblies arranged to allow problem-free thermal expansion and contraction of overlapping courses of the panel members.
