A protection circuit provides a control voltage to a 3-phase contactor, where the three phases of the 3-phase power supply are inputs to the 3-phase contactor. The protection circuit includes: four input terminals, configured to be connected respectively to the three phases and to the neutral line of the 3-phase power supply; an output terminal, providing the control voltage to a control line of the 3-phase contactor; and control circuitry configured to provide the control voltage when any one or more of the three phases are live and when the neutral line is connected, and to provide no control voltage when all three phases are disconnected or when the neutral line is disconnected.

An electric motor monitoring circuit apparatus (10) has a three phase electric motor (11) having an electric motor starter circuit. An insulation monitoring circuit (14) is coupled to the electric motor (11) and monitors insulation leakage of the motor (11). The insulation monitoring circuit (14) has a single phase AC power supply (36) for activating the starter circuit. A three phase monitor circuit (25) is coupled to the motor (11) for monitoring phase sequence in voltage amplitude for the motor (11). A relay circuit (22) inhibits activation of the motor upon detection of incorrect phasing or voltage or when insulation leakage exceeds a preselected threshold. The insulation monitoring circuit (14) closes a set of contacts to provide a ground return for the start circuit when the insulation monitor has determined the motor has passed the insulation monitor's test.

In phase loss detection circuits a false indication can occur doing the starting, stopping and severe load transitions of a three-phase motor. The present phase loss detection circuit solves this problem by using a circuit (33) to detect the lost of a phase, a comparator (25), a changing capacitor (C5), a peak detection (21) and an overload voltage integrator (38), all of which provide a positive indication of either a phase loss or overload condition.
