A combined top and bottom pincushion and gullwing distortion correction circuit uses a nonlinear reactor (T1) to introduce an appropriately modulated horizontal frequency (if) and second harmonic (i 2f ) of the horizontal frequency component into the vertical scanning current path. The nonlinear reactor (T1) is preferably a transformer with a secondary (W1, W2) that provides a correction voltage in series with the vertical scanning current path. The transformer effectively has two series opposing primary windings (W3, W4) magnetically coupled to the secondary (W1, W2). These primaries, energized by waves at the horizontal frequency and the second harmonic frequency, alternately predominate over each other to a variable degree, and in a manner determined by the vertical scanning current (i v ), for inducing corresponding voltage at the secondary winding (W1, W2). In a preferred embodiment the secondary winding is coupled to a first tuned circuit (L4, 64) that generates a horizontal rate north-south pincushion correction component voltage of the total correction voltage. The secondary winding is also coupled to a second tuned circuit (L3, C4) that generates a horizontal frequency second harmonic rate gullwing correction component voltage of the total correction voltage.

Vertical beam landing errors in color cathode ray tubes are corrected by a digital delay circuit (20) which provides horizontal scan line video pixel information at its proper location to produce a distortion corrected raster. Accurate correction is provided by sample interpolation techniques (31, 32, 37) that effectively form derived pixels that have an apparent location between scan-lines that corrects the scanning distortions. The location of the derived pixel relative to the video pixel samples can be determined by the selection (34, 35) of the interpolating coefficients. Such correction is preferably combined with a scan line offset technique (34, 30) providing a coarse correction.

The ferrite magnetic core has the flanges (16, 17 and 18) at both ends and the middle and has a hollow shape at one winding core portion (19) of the ferrite magnetic core. The windings (22 and 23) are wound around the winding core portions (19 and 20) and the permanent magnets (24 and 25) are combined to both end flanges (16 and 18).

A deflection circuit generates a deflection current (If) through a deflection coil (Lf). The deflection circuit comprises a series resistor (Rs) arranged in series with the deflection coil (Lf) to supply a feedback voltage (Vf; Vr), and a drive circuit (1, 5) which has an output coupled to the series arrangement of the deflection coil (Lf) and the series resistor (Rs). The drive circuit (1, 5) has an input coupled to the series resistor (Rs) to receive a feedback voltage (Vs). The drive circuit (1, 5) is further coupled to a conversion resistor (Rc) for receiving an input waveform (Vi). The drive circuit (1, 5) is arranged in a feedback loop to obtain a deflection current (If) with a shape resembling the input waveform (Vi). The deflection circuit further comprises a damping impedance (Rd) arranged in parallel with the deflection coil (Lf), and a current generating circuit (3) for generating a correction current (Ic) within the flyback period (Tf). The current generating circuit (3) is coupled to the conversion resistor (Rc) and/or the series resistor (Rs), and is activated during at least a last part of the flyback period (Tf). In this way the correction current (Ic) can easily be adapted with external components and does not suffer from tolerances in an integrated circuit.

A horizontal deflection circuit which enables various kinds of correction. One end of a first parallel circuit having a first switching element (11), a first damper diode (12) and a first resonance capacitor (13) connected mutually in parallel is grounded, and the other end of the first parallel circuit is connected to one end of a second parallel circuit having a second switching element (21), a second damper diode (22) and a second resonance capacitor (23) connected mutually in parallel. The other end of the first parallel circuit is connected to a DC power supply terminal via a primary winding of a fly-back transformer (6). The other end of the second parallel circuit is grounded via a series circuit made up of a horizontal deflecting coil (4) and an S-distortion correction capacitor (5), and a connection nod between the horizontal deflecting coil (4) and the S-distortion correction capacitor (5) is grounded via a parallel circuit made up of an intermediate pin-cushion distortion correcting circuit (60) and a horizontal linearity correcting circuit (70). Switching element control means (40) for switching the first switching element (11) by a horizontal drive signal and for controlling off-start timing and off-period of the second switching element (21) is provided.
