The device includes a base having a detent portion and a locating portion that provides a first position, a platform moveably coupled to the base, and a punch supported by the platform and configured to move between a reset position and a depressed position. The platform includes a detent element configured to engage the detent portion when the platform is proximate the first position and a locating element configured to provide fine location of the platform in the first position relative to the base by engaging the locating portion. The punch forms a pattern in a sheet of material when the punch moves from the reset position to the depressed position and a sheet of material is present proximate the depressed position.

An apparatus for embossing sheet material (32) by applying pressure to punch and die members (26, 28) positioned on both sides of the sheet material using force developed by one or more solenoids (40, 104) to force the punch and die members together to apply an imprinting force. In order to reduce the impact force, noise and wear on the mechanical parts, the solenoid may be energized in two separate steps, the first to move the punch and die members into contact with the surface of the card and the second to apply the embossing force to the punch and die members. Both rotary (104) and linear (40) solenoids may be used with differing coupling linkages (108, 110, 120, 122, 140, 142) in various embodiments of the embossing mechanism.

The system includes a die having a support defining an opening, a blade positioned adjacent to the support and defining a cutting edge, a debossing plate configured to cause one or more indentations in the sheet material and including a first side and a second side located substantially opposite the first side, the first side having a raised pattern defined thereon, and at least one pin configured to extend through the opening in the support and to move between a first position and a second position. When the at least one pin is in the first position, the debossing plate is supported by the support, and when the at least one pin is in the second position, the debossing plate is supported by the at least one pin.

A machine (10) hardens polymer steel backed foil stamping plates. The machine (10) includes a housing (11) providing a surface (12) upon which the plate to be hardened rests. Magnets (16) are provided to urge the steel backed polymer plate into contact with the surface (12). The polymer plate is heated to a temperature of 60 to 70°C for 5 to 10 minutes, 88 to 98°C for 5 to 10 minutes, 116 to 126°C for 20 to 45 minutes and 135 to 140°C for 5 to 10 minutes. The polymer plates are employed in stamping and embossing of foil to another material such as paper or plastics.

A method and apparatus for a two-pulse solenoid embossing system implementing an amplitude feedback circuit, i.e., current monitor (48), to provide precise amplitude and timing control over two current pulses (4, 5), and thereby provide precision control over the position and velocity of the embossing system's print elements (64a, 64b). To maintain the current amplitude during the second current pulse (5), the method and apparatus alternatively switches the power on and off to the solenoid coils (55) with a frequency such that a substantially constant current amplitude is maintained in the solenoid coils (55). The embossing system provides an improved solenoid body assembly (61) including a first stack of steeel laminations (93), a center block (82) and a second stack of steel laminations (81). A plunger (62) is slidably connected to the solenoid body assembly (61) by shaft (63). Cavities (79) receive dowel pins (71) which are attached to plunger (62). The cavity and dowel pin arrangement (79, 71) prevents the plunger (62) from rotating.

Bei einer Antriebsvorrichtung für eine Prägemaschine (1), durch die zwei sich in einem Ruheabstand gegenüberstehende Prägestempel (9,9') relativ zueinander gegen eine dazwischen gehaltene Prägeplatte (14) mit einem Prägedruck anpreßbar sind, ist einerseits ein Leerhub bis zur Berührung der Prägestempel (9,9') mit der Prägeplatte (14) zu überwinden und andererseits anschließend ein verhältnismäßig hoher Prägedruck auf die Prägestempel (9,9') auszuüben. In Anpassung an die während des Leerhubes und des Prägehubes herrschenden unterschiedlichen Verhältnisse ist vorgesehen, daß die Antriebsvorrichtung in eine der Überwindung des Leerhubes dienende erste Antriebseinrichtung (23) von verhältnismäßig geringer Antriebskraft und eine den verhältnismäßig kleinen Prägehub bewirkende zweite Antriebseinrichtung (24) von hoher Prägekraft aufgeteilt ist (Figur 1).
