摘要:
A method of a drawing a glass ribbon from molten glass sheet via a downdraw process by creating a temperature drop across a thickness of the molten glass flowing over forming surfaces of a forming wedge. The forming wedge includes an electrically conductive material for heating the glass above the root.

Improvements in devices for metering the flow of molten material such as glass include a catenary support structure, internal passageways in the bulbous valve body for directing molten material to the downstream side of the support arm or arms, and electrical isolation of the valve components from each other to reduce electrolytic corrosion. An advantage of the invention is that use of precious metals such as platinum is avoided.

The present disclosure provides an apparatus for eliminating a heterogeneous glass present in the top surface of a molten glass effectively, and a melting furnace and a glass manufacturing apparatus comprising the same. The apparatus for eliminating a heterogeneous glass according to one aspect of the present disclosure comprises a storage bath having an inlet and an outlet to receive a molten glass fed into the inlet and to discharge the received molten glass through the outlet, and an evacuating opening formed on the top of the storage bath, the evacuating opening allowing the received molten glass to overflow; a first gate being mounted close to the outlet of the storage bath to adjust an open area, thereby controlling the flow rate of the molten glass to be discharged through the outlet; and a second gate being mounted close to the inlet of the storage bath to control the height of the molten glass received in the storage bath at the section in which the evacuating opening is formed.

This invention relates to a method of making glass. In certain example embodiments, a major surface(s) of the glass is treated with aluminum chloride (e.g., AlCl 3 ) at or just prior to the annealing lehr. The aluminum chloride treatment at or just prior to the annealing lehr, in either a float or patterned line glass making process, is advantageous in that it allows the treatment to be performed at a desirable glass temperature and permits exhaust functions in or proximate the annealing lehr to remove byproducts of the treatment in an efficient manner.

Glasses are disclosed which can be used to produce substrates for flat panel display devices, e.g., active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs). The glasses have MgO concentrations in the range from 1.0 mole percent to 3.0 mole percent and Σ[RO]/[Al2O3] ratios greater than or equal to 1.00, where [Al2O3] is the mole percent of Al2O3 and Σ[RO] equals the sum of the mole percents of MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO. These compositional characteristics have been found to improve the melting properties of batch materials used to produce the glass, which, in turn, allows the glasses to be fined (refined) with more environmentally friendly fining agents, e.g., tin as opposed to arsenic and/or antimony.

A press bending apparatus (10) for shaping heat softened glass sheets between an upper press member (30) and a lower press member (32) is provided. The conveyor system (28) for transferring the sheets of glass (12) in the press bending apparatus includes concave shaped rollers (68) such that the glass sheets tend to sag into conformity with the rolls (68) as the sheets are positioned for bending operations between the upper (30) and lower (32) press members. The lower press member is a continuous press bending ring (50) to prevent improper sagging of the glass sheet (12) around the peripheral edges of the sheet (12). The concave shape of the rolls (68) mounted inside of the press ring (50) provides maximum support for the formed glass sheet to prevent sagging of the glass. Additional production benefits can be obtained by forming the conveyor system (28) and lower press member (32) as a modular unit and the upper press member (30) as a modular unit for each model of bent glass to facilitate changing the press members for production model changes.

Layered glass products such as multilayer glass rods or fibers are formed in a preferably continuous process wherein at least two component glasses (A, B) are supplied to an annular mixing zone (20) wherein relative movement of the annular surfaces (22, 24) produces spiral layering of the glasses (A, B) and the formation of a glass product stream having a preselected gradient in composition and glass properties across a diameter thereof.
