An apparatus is disclosed for manufacturing communication cables with improved, more uniform impedance characteristics at signal frequencies up to and above 600 MHz. The apparatus includes an 'inside-out' rigid twisting machine (16) and at least two bobbins (26, 26') supported within each such machine (16). Each rigid twisting machine (16) includes a drive (34) for spinning each of the bobbins (26, 26') about their respective axes, and fly-off arrangement (40, 40') is provided for flying off an insulated conductor wire (W, W') wound on each of the bobbins (26, 26') with substantially no tension in the wire (W, W') when the bobbin (26, 26') attains a first rotational speed. Guides (96, 98, 100) are provided for guiding the wires (W, W') from each of the bobbins (26, 26') to a closing point where the wires (W, W') are closed. A double twist bow arrangement (48, 50) is provided which includes second drive (60, 64) for twisting the closed wires (W, W') at a second rotational speed to form a twinned cable. Controls are provided for adjusting the first and second rotational speeds to apply a pre-twist to each of the wires (W, W') about their individual neutral axes prior to twinning, after which a take-up (94) is provided for taking up the twin cable. A bank or line of rigid twisting machines are preferably used to produce two or more twinned cables, which all can then be twinned or twisted about each other to form a multi-cable assembly. An alternate embodiment uses a single bobbin (26) wound with a pair of conductor wires (2W) that are flown off together and twisted about each other, resulting in a machine with a smaller footprint and bow and higher speeds of operation.

In the manufacture of reinforced composites having reinforcing filaments within a matrix, a filament consisting of a staple yarn spun from discontinuous fibres with low twist is subject to controlled stretching to vary the weight per unit length of the yarn along the length of the yarn. Apparatus for performing the stretching operation comprises two roll pairs (11, 12 and 13, 14) spaced apart along the yarn feed path and rotated at controlled relative speeds to obtain the desired elongation of the yarn. The yarn may be used directly in producing a composite e.g. by applying resin to the yarn and winding it onto a mandrel or former, or it may be used to prepare a preform, prepeg tape, woven fabric or the like to be used in the production of a shaped composite. The invention makes it possible to vary the characteristics, e.g. thickness and/or strength, over a composite in a way not previously possible.

Bei Unterschreitung oder Überschreibung einer vorgegebenen Spannungstoleranz wird dann entsprechend spannungserhöhend oder spannungsvermindernd auf die Spinnvorrichtung eingewirkt.

Les fibres courtes écrues obtenues sont ensuite cardées et étirées puis transformées en mèches. La mèche est ensuite filée au mouillé à l'eau froide sur un métier à filer pourvu d'un train d'étirage (2) à manchon (5). A fasciated yarn suitable for making apparel fabric and having properties approaching that of ring spun yarn is produced by vacuum spinning, including directly from sliver. An elongate hollow shaft (20) of the vacuum spinning apparatus has a vacuum reservoir (32), or interior chamber, that is generally in the shape of a right circular cone, and the interior passageway (31) of the shaft from the first end (21) thereof to the interior chamber can have the form of a right circular cone frustum. Perforations (40) operatively connected to the interior chamber have a generally wedge-shape. The perforations and the passageway sections between the first end of the shaft and the perforations are dimensioned so that they allow sufficient air flow to achieve optimum fiber wrapping action. Initial threading of the vacuum spinning apparatus is provided by a vacuum tube (745) mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to and spaced from the axis of rotation of the shaft, the vacuum tube being connected up to a vacuum reservoir (742) and source of vacuum (728) and rotatable from an inoperative to an operative position.
