Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren zum Inspizieren von Seilen, bei dem ein zu inspizierendes Seil mit einer Inspektionsvorrichtung befahren wird, die mindestens ein Inspektionsgerät zur Aufnahme von Daten zur Zustandscharakterisierung des Seiles trägt, wobei die Inspektionsvorrichtung mindestens drei Rollen umfasst, die kraftschlüssig mit dem Seil verbunden sind, wobei mindestens eine Rolle durch mindestens einen Motor angetrieben wird, so dass die Inspektionsvorrichtung am Seil verfahrbar ist, zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass der mindestens eine Motor so ansteuerbar ist, dass die Inspektionsvorrichtung vorbestimmbare Positionen an dem Seil reproduzierbar anfährt und wobei zumindest zeitweise Daten zur Zustandscharakterisierung des Seiles positionsgenau aufgenommen Diese Daten werden insbesondere life während der Inspektion dargestellt. Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren und die erfindungsgemäße Inspektionsvorrichtung A gestatten eine reproduzierbare Oberflächeninspektion von Seilen beispielsweise von Hängebrücken. So ist mit automatischen Mitteln die Position und die Art von Oberflächendefekten am Seil feststellbar und diese sind wieder auffindbar.
