A manufacturing method includes, cutting out a plurality of rings (23), polishing the rings (23), adjusting the plurality of rings (23) so that they exhibit circumferential lengths respectively predetermined for them, nitriding the plurality of rings (23), and assembling in order to layer the plurality of rings (23) into a multi-layered ring; wherein after the rings (23) are cut out from the pipe, each of them is polished one by one so that their order is not changed; in nitriding, they are subjected to a nitriding process in a state where they are set in a jig in order to keep their order; and in assembling, the rings (23) are assembled so that rings (23) that were parts originally adjacent to each other in a state of the pipe become layers that are adjacent to each other in the multi-layered ring (12A, 12B).

A ring set (31) for a drive belt (3) for a continuously variable transmission composed of a number of mutually concentrically nested steel rings (32), each having a nitride layer. According to the present disclosure, those steel rings (32) of the ring set (31) that are located between the innermost steel ring (32) and the outermost steel ring (32) thereof are provided with a compressive internal residual stress in the vicinity of their respective outer surfaces having a value in the range between 350 and 650 MPa, whereas the radial inner side of the said innermost steel ring (32) and the radial outer side of the said outermost steel ring (32) are provided with a compressive internal residual stress exceeding such compressive internal residual stress of those in-between rings (32).
