Field balancing may be performed with an irradiation system including a plurality of adjustable radiant-energy emitters. The irradiation system powers the radiant-energy emitters from a power source and radiant energy is emitted from the radiant-energy emitters, where an amount of radiant energy emitted from each emitter is capable of being varied based on power received from the power source. A plurality of radiant-energy sensors detects an amount of radiant energy which includes radiant energy created directly by at least one of the radiant-energy emitters. The amount of radiant energy detected at at least two of the radiant-energy sensors is compared, and at least one of the radiant-energy emitters is adjusted by varying the power received from the power source so that the amount of radiant energy detected at each of the radiant-energy sensors tends towards becoming approximately equal. The emitting of radiant energy from each radiant-energy emitter is terminated when a total amount of radiant energy emitted from the plurality of adjustable radiant-energy emitters exceeds a predetermined threshold value, where the threshold value is sufficient to allow the total amount of radiant energy emitted from the plurality of adjustable radiant-energy emitters to sanitize a particular area in which the emitters are located.

A system for detecting an optimal timing for cleaning duty solar panels is provided herein. The system includes: a simulation sensor and a reference sensor which include photovoltaic cells identical to the photovoltaic cells of the duty solar panels, wherein the simulation sensor is configured to generate a simulation electrical signal which simulates electricity signal generated by the duty solar panels; and wherein the reference sensor is configured to generate a reference electrical signal which simulates electricity signal generated by the duty solar panels in a clean condition; and protection means configured to selectively expose the reference sensor for a specified period of time, wherein the system is configured to compare the simulation signal and the reference signal when the reference sensor is uncovered and provide an indication that the duty solar panels should be cleaned if a difference between the simulation and the reference signals exceeds a predefined level.

A process for pre-calibrating illumination sources permits illumination light intensities to be set to a near optimal level during training of an optical inspection system. Applicants have found that the illumination source intensities for a category of illuminators are sufficiently constant from machine to machine that the data collected during calibration of an illumination source on a machine using a particular type of source may be used on other machines of the same type using the same type of illumination source when combined with the reticle light intensity data for different zoom magnification's of the particular machine being used. That is, using known data for particular machine and the illumination source light intensity data for the same type of machine and illumination source permits accurate presetting of an illumination source.

An apparatus and related method for optical calibration of spectrophotometers is described. The apparatus is a calibration plate including one or more cuvettes filled with solutions of interest. The cuvettes are sealed to prevent evaporation. The cuvettes also possess a compressible component to allow for expansion of the solution and a bubble control apparatus to ensure that the compressible component does not intersect the beam path. A piece of neutral density glass is optionally included in the apparatus to track optical changes of the solutions over time.

An active pixel sensor for use in ambient light conditions together with a controlled light source, the sensor producing a difference signal which is indicative of the intensity of light incident on the sensor from the controlled light source. The sensor operates in two phases and includes a photodetector coupled to processing circuitry coupled to storage circuitry. In the first phase, the photodetector generates an ambient light signal and the processing circuitry memorises the ambient light signal. In the second phase the photodetector generates a total light signal, the processing circuitry subtracts the stored memorised ambient light signal from the total light signal to produce the difference signal, and the storage circuitry stores the difference signal. The sensor alternates between the first and second phases in response to receiving a strobing signal, the strobing signal and the controlled light source being synchronised.
