The invention relates to a device and a method for generating a side tone (84), in particular for application in aviation and space technology. The device comprises a headset (50) with a microphone and earphones for the acquisition of an original signal (80) and for the reproduction of a side tone (84), a communication unit (43, 40) for connecting and controlling the headset (50), and a transmit/receive module (20). The device for generating the side tone (84) is characterised in that it furthermore comprises a comparator (60) which receives both the signal (81) that enters the transmit/receive module (20) and the signal (82) that is in fact being transmitted by the transmit/receive module (20), and in that it determines that the original signal (80) is actually being transmitted. In this case the comparator (60) instructs the communication unit (43, 40) to output the original signal (80) as a side tone (84) by way of the earphone of the headset (50).

This invention discloses an improvement to a digital Acoustic Echo Control (AEC) in hands-free telephones. It describes an additional adaptive filter referred to as a residual echo filter, which is placed after the usual echo canceller and it is used to efficiently and accurately estimate a residual echo signal b(i) and a system coupling factor ß(i), which can be utilized to establish an efficient control for the AEC system and construct the appropriate filters. The invention also describes a control block means performing a joint operation control of the echo canceller, residual echo suppressor and residual echo filter for achieving more consistent echo cancellation results and enhancing output signal quality.

A telephone line interface and side-tone attenuation circuit includes two opto-electric converters. The first has an input interconnected to receive a signal proportional to a near-end signal, and an output interconnected to modulate a current proportional to the near-end signal onto the subscriber loop. The second has its input interconnected to provide a signal proportional to a current on the subscriber loop, including the current proportional to the near-end signal, at its output. A summing amplifier receives signals proportional to the output voltage of the second opto-electric converter and a signal proportional to the near-end signal. The output voltage of the second opto-electric amplifier includes a component that is substantially 180° out of phase with the near-end signal, allowing the near-end signal to be cancelled at the summing amplifier.

An echo canceller circuit (25) for use in an echo canceller system is set forth that provides sensitive non-linear echo path response detection (300). The echo canceller circuit (25) comprises a first digital filter (35) having non-adaptive tap coefficients to simulate an echo response occurring during a call. A second digital filter (30) having adaptive tap coefficients to simulate an echo response occurring during a call. The adaptive tap coefficients of the second digital filter are updated over the duration of the call. A coefficient transfer controller is disposed in the echo canceller circuit (25) to a transfer the adaptive tap coefficients of the second digital filter to replace the tap coefficients of the first digital filter when a set of one or more transfer conditions is met. A non-linear echo path response detector (300) is provided. The non-linear echo path detector is responsive to one or more parameters of the first and second digital filters to detect a non-linear path condition. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, the non-linear echo path detector (300) is responsive to a transfer density value corresponding to a number of transfers executed by the coefficient transfer controller (65). In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention, the non-linear echo path detector (300) is responsive to a coefficient time dispersion characteristic of the second digital filter for detecting a non-linear path condition.
