It is possible to transfer data from an image processing unit to an encoding unit without using an external memory and to perform high-speed processing by internal transmission having a wider band than the external memory. An entire image (41)of an original image is divided into six (64×4)-pixel blocks. Enlargement processing is performed for each of the blocks. Data is read from each of the blocks in the order of the number assigned such as 1, 2, 3 .... The first block is processed by a size modification unit to generate image data on a (128×8)-pixel block (42). A unit of (16×8)-pixel micro block (43) is read out from the image data (42) and encoded to obtain JPEG data (44). A code rearrangement unit rearranges the order of JPEG data (46) in the block unit, thereby generating JPEG data (48). When the JPEG data (48) in this order is decoded, it is possible to obtain an decoded image (49) whose block order coincides with the area (41) of the original image.

During the gradual partitioning the number of binary ones are counted for each resulting sub-matrix. If a resulting sub-matrix does not consist of mixed symbols no further partitioning of that sub-matrix is required. The counted number of binary ones for each sub-matrix is then coded and transmitted. The method provides an efficient coding particularly for sparse binary matrices such as bi-level images or bit maps.

A method of compressing digital image data, comprising successive data groups of bits, the contents of which are values of pixels of an image, in which method a check is made in a selection step whether a first condition is satisfied which at least stipulates that a data group has the same contents as one or more data groups following thereon. If the first condition is satisfied, said data groups are replaced, in a compression step, by a compression code representing these data groups. Otherwise, in a copying step, only the first data group is replaced by a code consisting of the contents of the data group. The said steps are repeated for the next data groups. The method also comprises an identification step for adding an identification code for characterising the nature of the code, wherein the identification step is carried out only when the compression step is carried out.
