A deflection system for driving an electron beam in a raster scan including a deflection coil L1 energised by a linear amplifier A1 effective to produce an output current proportional to the input voltage signal during the forward scan of the raster. A resonant switch circuit 11 causes resonant flyback of the current through the deflection coil L1 at the end of each line of the raster scan. A current boost circuit 51 including a constant current source 53 is provided to provide current to the resonant switch means during the flyback period to restore the current through the deflection coil L1 to its initial scan value.

A signal produced by a telecine suffers from losses and defects caused by difference in response to incident light of different areas of the screen area scanned. These differences may arise from burning of the screen, blemishes, dirt in the system, differences in grain size of phosphor particles, missing particles and losses in the internal optical system of the machine. The invention divides the scanning area into a correction map and devises for each area a correction factor based on the response of that area to incident illumination, where a defect is detected, video data from an adjacent area is substituted. Correction factors are held in a look-up RAM (50) and output to a multiplier (53) where they are multiplied with video data. The video data input to the multiplier (53) may be suppressed and a test pattern may be loaded into the multiplier. Burn at the ends of video lines may be reduced by reducing the intensity and/or dwell time of the scanning spot on any one area of the screen in the vicinity of the line end.

To compensate for the effects of film instability in a film gate, a film instability compensation system comprises a positional transducer (2) for measuring the position of the film edge relative to a sprocket hole (4) which is maintained in contact with a sprocket tooth (6) by pressure roller (8). Positional tranducer (2) measures the distance between the film edge and a sprocket hole and then measures deviations from the distance for subsequent sprocket holes to form a compensation signal. The output of the positional transducer (2) is coupled to a delay unit (10) which delays the signal corresponding to the error at a particular sprocket hole until that sprocket hole reaches the film gate. Signals representative of the cyclic errors incurred due to the relative lateral displacement of the sprocket holes, are stored in the memory 30 and are applied to a subtractor circuit 24, within which the compensation signal from the output of the pipeline register 22 is adjusted to take account of the cyclic errors, and to provide an overall compensation signal which is applied to the horizontal scan shift when the appropriate sprocket hole reaches the film gate.

In a method of converting on optical signal into an electronic video signal by means of cathode ray tube ('CRT') scanning means (42), each image is scanned in a plurality of scanning operations with each scanning operation using a different area (32,34) of the screen of the CRT scanning means and the signals resulting from the plurality of scanning operations are combined to provide the electronic video signal. Light from the CRT scanning means is passed through deflection means (48) operable to deflect light from respective ones of the plurality of different areas (32,34) of the screen of the CRT scanning means (42) along the same path into an objective lens so that the same area of a film gate positioned in the optical path beyond the objective lens is scanned in each scanning operation. The output of the CRT scanning means (42) is monitored by means of a photoelectric device operable to provide an output signal when a blemish is detected on the screen of the CRT scanning means. The output signal is applied to an analogue-to-digital converter used to process the electronic video signal to cause the video signal level immediately prior to detection of the blemish to be maintained while the blemish persists.
