    摘要: In a gas discharge lamp, when the current through the inductor (17) has increased to a point where the voltage drop across the resistor (15) exceeds the voltage of the reference source (23, 24), the comparator amplifier (20) triggers the monostabile multivibrator (18) causing the solid state switching device (14) to be turned off. This acts to collapse the magnetic field in the inductor (17) thereby causing a large flyback voltage to appear across the lamp (11) sufficient to light the lamp. At the end of the predetermined time period of the low output state of the monostabile multivibrator (18), its output turns the solid state switching device (14) on, allowing current to flow from the power supply (16) through the inductor (17) and the lamp (11), thereby maintaining the lamp in the lit state and increasing the magnetic field in the inductor (17). The current flow through the lamp, when the solid state switching device (14) is on, is in the opposite direction from the current flowing through the lamp when the solid state switching device is off.

    摘要: A high-intensity discharge lamp 1 includes an arc tube 2 having a pair of main electrodes 3, 4, a starting circuit 13 having a thermally-actuated switch 19 for disconnecting the starting circuit 13, and an outer tube 14 for containing the arc tube and the starting circuit, and the lamp 1 is lighted by means of a reactance ballast 21. The thermally-actuated switch 19 includes an envelope bulb 27 that covers contacts 23, 24 of the thermally-actuated switch 19. Thereby, occurrence of sustained arc discharge in the outer tube 14 is prevented in the case of a starting failure or a break-off of the arc tube 2 at the end of the lamp's life.

    摘要: Ballast and starting circuits for controlling current and voltage applied to an electrical discharge lamp (25). The ballast circuits use positive (18) and negative (16) capacitors which are alternately charged and discharged in an asynchronous manner. The positively charged capacitors are charged during positive portions of alternating current and discharged during negative portions of the alternating current. The negatively charged capacitors are charged during negative portions of the alternating current and discharged during positive portions. Transistors or other appropriate switching means (20, 22) are used to switch the capacitors to the lamp during discharge thereof. Startup circuits (30) are included for boosting the voltage applied to the lamp either manually or automatically upon startup. A startup regular circuit is also shown for controlling flow during periods of high current demand such as during startup.
