    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quenching method, where in the quenching method of a steel material, such as a high strength boron steel, a defective quenching structure on the surface layer of the steel material after quenching, is prevented and the mechanical properties of the steel material can be improved by obtaining the uniform structure.
    SOLUTION: In the quenching of the high strength boron steel, a steam film collapsing time being a lapse of time from the time point starting the cooling to the time point rapidly dropping the temperature of a treated material, is made to be a control item for deciding the characteristic of quenching oil, the quenching is applied with the quenching oil adjusted so that this steam film collapsing time becomes a prescribed time or less (≤2.1 sec specified in a cooling ability testing method regulated in JIS K 2242). The adjustment of the steam film collapsing time is performed by preparing the quenching oil, in which mineral oil is used as the basic oil and various kinds of polymers having high molecular weight are blended as the additive for shortening the steam film collapsing time.
