Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field emission type electron emission element showing sufficient on/off characteristics, and capable of efficiently emitting electrons with a low voltage. SOLUTION: This electron emitting element is so structured that a cathode electrode 1 and a gate electrode 32 are arranged on a substrate 31; the surface of the cathode electrode 1 is covered with an insulation layer 2; and a dipole layer 20 is formed by terminating the surface of the insulation layer 2 with hydrogen.
