Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more improve a drivability while meeting drivers's demands more when starting an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When a starting request for an engine is based upon driver's intention and a battery output limit indicating allowable electric power which can be charged in and discharged from a battery 50 is not within a predetermined output allowable range, a first starting mode wherein the engine 22 is quickly started is set, but when the starting request is not based on the driver's intention or when the start request is based on the driver's intention and the battery output limit is within the output allowable range, meanwhile, a second starting mode which is slower than the first starting mode is set and the engine 22 is started in the set start mode. Thus, the engine 22 is started slowly at a start request not based upon the driver's intention so that the driver does not have a feeling of physical disorder, and in spite of the starting request based upon the driver's intention on condition that power can be output from a motor MG2. SOLUTION: When the kinetic energy of the vehicle cannot be stored in a battery as the converted electric energy due to the input limit Win of the battery in braking (S160), a motor attached to a drive shaft which is linked with a vehicle shaft via a transmission is separated by operating the brake (clutch) of the transmission, so as to preserve part of the kinetic energy of the vehicle as the rotational energy of the rotor of the motor (S200). Then the separated motor is connected when an accelerator pedal is pressed, etc. In this case, the rotational energy of the rotor of the motor is used for driving the vehicle.
