    Abstract: PURPOSE: To reduce the quantity of a catalyst without deteriorating productivity and to simplify a post treatment process after a reaction by making a phenol derivative in which a phenolic hydroxyl group forms sulfonic ester. CONSTITUTION: When sulfuric acid and phenol are reacted in a mole ratio of 2-4:1 and at temperature of 50-100 deg.C, an alkylation catalyst for an aromatic compound prepared from a phenol derivative having a sulfo group on an aromatic nucleus and in which a phenolic hydroxyl group forms sulfonic ester is obtained. In the alkylation catalyst, disulfate having two or three sulfo groups on an aromatic nucleus such as trisulfonated phenoldisulfate and disulfonated phenoldisulfate is especially preferable because of its high catalytic activity. A tertiary olefin and phenol are reacted at 50-140 deg.C in the presence of the catalyst to obtain a tertiry alkylphenol.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To purify binaphthol in an industrially advantageous and convenient way by removing by-product in oxidation coupling reaction of β-naphthol into an aqueous phase after oxidation reaction of the by-product in an organic solvent in the presence of an alkaline compound. SOLUTION: This method is to add (A) 0.1-0.5 N alkali aqueous solution to a mixed solution between a reaction product obtained by oxidation coupling reaction of β-naphthol and an organic solvent having a permittivity of l to 7 (preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon such as xylene or toluene), followed by agitation while oxidation reaction of the above reaction product, and to leave them to (B) stand, followed by removing an aqueous phase and by crystallizing the objective product from an organic phase. The mixed solution is obtained e.g. by removing a solid catalyst from a solution of the reaction product obtained by oxidation coupling reaction of β-naphthol in an organic solvent having a permittivity of 1 to 7 in the presence of a supported catalyst. The oxidation reaction preferably is carried out by contacting with an oxygen- containing gas.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing bisphenols which is excellent in industrial productivity, and by which the isolation of the product is readily carried out, and the bisphenols are produced in high yield by subjecting phenols to an oxidation coupling reaction in the presence of a metal salt of a fatty acid, and an organic solvent having the dielectric constant within a specific range. SOLUTION: (A) Phenols [preferably phenol or naphthol] are subjected to an oxidation coupling reaction in the presence of (B) a metal salt of a fatty acid (preferably a metal salt of a 2-30C aliphatic carboxylic acid) and (C) an organic solvent having 1-15 dielectric constant (preferably an aromatic organic solvent) to provide the objective biphenols. Preferably, the components A to C are compatibilized and the compatibilized materials are subjected to the oxidation coupling reaction. The component C is preferably used in an amount of 1-5 times as much as the component A expressed by weight ratio to the amount of the component A. The oxidation coupling reaction is preferably carried out under a temperature condition of 100-300 deg.C. The objective compound can be readily isolated by cooling after the reaction to precipitate the compound, and filtrating the precipitated product.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing bishenol F excellent in purity and quality, by which an after treatment of the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde for producing bisphenol F can be simplified. SOLUTION: In the production of bisphenol F by using oxalic acid or phosphoric acid as a catalyst, distillation for recovering phenol and purifying distillation for removing scarcely remaining phenol are carried out at temperatures in the range of 120-160 deg.C in the presence of the acidic catalyst which has not been deactivated completely or partially after the reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. Under the conditions, bisphenol F is not decomposed, accordingly the purity of the bisphenol F is not lowered and the deactivation process of the acidic catalyst is simplified or omitted. Thus, pure bisphenol F excellent in quality is obtained with a simpler pretreatment.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a method for easily purifying p-t-butylphenol in a short time through separating byproducts such as 2,6-p-t-butylphenol to extremely low levels while retaining high recovery of the p-t-butylphenol. CONSTITUTION:Such an amount of an organic solvent (e.g. cyclohexane) as to be soluble for the whole amount of crude p-t-butylphenol (hereafter, abbreviated as crude PTBP) but run to a non-fluid state with the whole amount of the organic solvent included in a liquid state in the PTBP deposited after cooling, for example, 20-120 pts.wt., based on 100 pts.wt. of the PTBP, of the organic solvent is used to dissolve the crude PTBP in the solvent into an organic solvent solution followed by cooling to the non-fluid state, and the organic solvent is then removed by a mechanical separation means such as centrifugal separation to yield a solid product, which is then dried, thus purifying the crude PTBP.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compound useful as an epoxy resin material having low viscosity by reacting phenol with formaldehyde in the presence of a phosphorus- based catalyst. CONSTITUTION: Bisphenol F is produced by reacting (A) phenol with (B) formaldehyde in a heterogeneous liquid-liquid system consisting of the phenol A and (C) a phase consisting of an aqueous solution of an acidic catalyst using (D) an equilibrium mixture of hemiformals as a source of the component B. Preferably, the component C is an aqueous solution of oxalic acid having an oxalic acid concentration of 1-30%, the amount of the component A is 3-50mol based on 1mol of the component B in the component D, the weight ratio of the component C to the component A is 0.3-3 and the component D is produced by the condensation reaction of the component B with a 1-8C alcohol.
