Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-soluble copolymer useful for detergent composition or as a water-treating agent or the like, which copolymer comprises structural units derived from a monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomer, structural units derived from a monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid monomer, and structural units derived from a sulfo-containing monoethylenically unsaturated monomer and has specified functions such as a Ca ion scavenging capacity. SOLUTION: This copolymer essentially consists of structural units derived from (A) a 4-6C monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (salt or anhydride) monomer, structural units derived from (B) a 3-8C monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid (salt) monomer, and (C) structural units derived from a sulfo(sulfonate)-containing monoethylenically unsaturated monomer and has a Ca ion scavenging capacity of at feast 0.40, a capacity of dispersing clay in high-hardness water of at least 0.35, and a gelation resistance of at least 0.35. The copolymer is one prepared by polymerizing 30-70 mol% component A with 30-70 mol% component B, 2-16 mol% component C, and 0-5 mol% copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomer and having a weight-average molecular weight of 2,000-20,000.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low-molecular weight (meth)acrylic acid (salt)-based polymer having an excellent color tone and to provide a method for producing the same and its application. SOLUTION: This method comprises polymerizing a monomer component composed of 100-95 mol% of a monoethylenic unsaturated monomer of a 3-6C monocarboxylic acid (salt) (a) and 0-5 mol% of a monoethylenic unsaturated monomer (b) copolymerizable with the monomer (a) (the total of the components (a) and (b) is 100 mol%) in the presence of an alkali substance in a highly concentrated aqueous solution. Both a sulfate and hydrogen peroxide are used as polymerization catalysts. The total amount of the alkali substance used is S99 mol% of the amount required for neutralizing the whole acid groups of the monomer component. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a specific water-soluble polymer exhibiting a high action for scavenging a calcium ion and showing a high action for dispersing clay even in high-hardness water, a detergent composition containing the polymer and to provide uses except the detergent composition by making the best of the characteristics of the water-soluble polymer. SOLUTION: This specific water-soluble polymer is characterized in that the polymer has >=0.40 calcium ion scavenging ability and >=0.50 clay dispersion ability in high-hardness water and is preferably obtained by compounding a polymer A having >=0.45 calcium ion scavenging ability with a polymer B having >=0.65 clay dispersion ability as essential components. This detergent composition obtained by using the water-soluble polymer has improved detergency even in high-hardness water.
