PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device that controls image density by accurately calculating development γ through forming gradation patterns once so that the amount of toner attachment is correctly calculated by the number of fewer toner patches and a toner patch is securely interpolated in the detecting range of a sensor, and to provide an image forming apparatus with the device. SOLUTION: The image density control device forms a plurality of toner gradation patterns in series for each toner different in color, reads the toner gradation patterns by an optical detecting means to calculate the developing capability of the image forming apparatus, and changes an image forming condition for the image forming apparatus based on the result of the calculation. The image density control device includes an estimating means for estimating a change in the state of the developing capability of the image forming apparatus. While maintaining the total of the toner gradation patterns based on the result of estimation by the estimating means, the image density control device changes the number of toner patterns for the respective colors to form the toner gradation patterns. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that performs stable image density adjustment in a short time while restraining increases in the size and price of the apparatus. SOLUTION: When the adjusted value L of an amount of light emission of an image density detecting means in calibration is set to a predetermined range, the image forming apparatus performs a pre-calibration operation in which a determination is made whether the output average value Vsg (0) of the image density detecting means has a predetermined value or not in a detecting time that is ≤1/2 of regular calibration with an adjusted value L of the amount of light emission before the subsequent calibration. If the output average value Vsg (0) of the image density detecting means has the predetermined value, the image forming apparatus does not perform the calibration operation. When a variation in a plurality of output values obtained by detecting non-image parts of an image carrier, obtained by sampling in order to calculate the output average value Vsg (0) of the image density detecting means in the pre-calibration operation, reaches the predetermined value or above, the image forming apparatus performs the calibration operation. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of securing uniformity of adhesion amounts of lubricant applied on the surface of an image carrier irrespective of images to be output with simple and inexpensive structure. SOLUTION: In such a case that many images with a vertical black belt in the vertical subscanning direction are continuously output at the same position, difference is inevitably generated in the adhesion amount of the lubricant on the photoreceptor compared with other parts since toner consumption at the same position of a photoreceptor surface becomes abnormally large. In the present invention, the main scanning direction (longitudinal direction of the photoreceptor) is subdivided into n pieces, the number of pixels in each of the subdivided areas is memorized in a counter number A(n), when the number of pixels is equal to or less than the specified number of pixels, the number of pixels of an amount equivalent to the difference, the photoreceptor is exposed, developed to the subdivided areas (n), in a non-imaged area after printing operation, to execute compulsory consumption of toner. (a) represents images obtained by subdividing the main scanning direction. (b) represents a case of forcibly consuming the toner by every area. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
