Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the durability by absorbing thermal stress by a method wherein a muffler located between inner pipes which are engaged in freely slidable manner and an outer cylinder is filled with a sound-absorbent material, and separators in the muffler are fixed to the inner pipes and the outer cylinder, also cut-outs are provided on flanges of the outer periphery of the separators.
CONSTITUTION: Inner pipes 19, 20 are inserted into an outer cylinder 16 of a sub-muffler 15 as an inner pipe, the outer cylinder and the inner pipes are welded together and fixed with end plates 17, 18. The diameter of the inner pipe 20 is enlarged at the end part of the inner pipe 19 side, the inner pipe 19 is engaged to the diameter-enlarged part 20a in freely slidable manner. Small holes 21 are bored on the pipe wall of the inner pipes 19, 20, a muffling chamber 22 is formed with the outer surfaces of the inner pipes 19, 20 and the inner surface of the outer cylinder 16, then the inside of the inner pipes 19, 20 and the muffling chamber 22 are communicated with the small holes 21. A sound-absorbent material 33 is filled into the muffling chamber 22, the separators 23, 24 are fixed to the inner pipes 19, 20 and the outer cylinder 16, also cut-outs 30a, 30b, 31a, 31b are provided on the separators.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a catalytic converter which aims at reducing the flow resistance, by providing such an arrangement that a section which pierces through and extends in a converter casing has a cross-sectional area larger than that of a section which pierces through the converter casing. CONSTITUTION:A secondary air introduction pipe 11 attached to a converter casing 1, comprises a piercing section 12 piercing through a through-hole 3a formed in the lower half 3 of the converter casing 1 and an extending section disposed in a gap part 10 and extending in the direction crossing the stream of exhaust gas flowing in the gap, the extending section having a large pipe diameter or closs-sectional area in comparison with the piercing section 12. With this arrangement, the supply amount of secondary air is increased, particularly, due to the pulsation of exhaust gas.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To install a sealing member with ease in a catalytic converter, by packing a sealing member with a combustible film after compressing the sealing member, winding the packed sealing member around a monolithic catalyst carrier, installing the same in the casing of the catalytic converter, and then expanding the sealing member by burning out the combustible film. CONSTITUTION:In manufacturing a catalytic converter, a sealing member 4 made of a fiber material and having a thickness greater than the clearance delta between a casing 1 and a monolithic catalyst carrier 2 is prepared at first and it is compressed to such an extent that the thickness is made smaller than the clearances delta. Then, the sealing member 4 is inserted into a combustible film 5 and an enclosed sheet 6 of the combustible film is formed by evacuating the inside of the combustible film 5 and isolating the sealing member 4 from the atmosphere. Subsequently, the sheet 6 is wound around said carrier 2, and then the carrier 2 is installed in the casing 1. In this state, the sealing member 4 is expanded by introducing exhaust gas of an engine into the casing 1 and burning out the combustible film 5, whereby the sealing member 4 expanded through absorption of gas is supported firmly between the carrier 2 and the casing 1.
