PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microwave ablation system for verifying correct system operation prior to high power energy delivery by a microwave antenna. SOLUTION: The microwave ablation system includes a generator operable to output energy and an ablation probe coupled to the generator that delivers the energy to a tissue region. The ablation system also includes a controller operable to control the generator and at least one sensor coupled to the ablation probe and the controller that detects an operating parameter of the ablation probe. The controller performs a system check by ramping up an energy output of the generator from a low energy level to a high energy level and monitors an output from the sensor at predetermined intervals of time during the system check to determine an abnormal state. The handle assembly 170 includes a handle body 173 defining a chamber therein. The probe/amplifier assembly includes a probe 110 and a microwave amplifier unit 189. The probe 110 extends distally from the distal end of the handle assembly 170. The microwave amplifier unit 189 is disposed within the chamber. The microwave amplifier unit 189 and the probe 110 are mechanically coupled to one another to form a unitary body. The probe/amplifier assembly is selectively removable from the handle assembly 170.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide devices and electromagnetic radiation delivery procedures for facilitating to determine the area or volume of surrounding tissue that is ablated when it is difficult to assess the extent to which microwave energy radiates into the surrounding tissue, as for an apparatus and method for providing energy to tissue. SOLUTION: The microwave ablation system includes an energy source adapted to generate microwave energy and a power splitting device 230 having an input part adapted to connect to the energy source and a plurality of output parts. The plurality of output parts are configured to be coupled to a corresponding plurality of energy delivery devices 250A, 250B, and 250C.
