PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synthetic aperture radar which simply achieves compact polarimetry SAR by using a general-purpose type phased array antenna used in common for vertical-horizontal polarized waves. SOLUTION: An antenna part constitutes the phased array antenna used in common for vertical-horizontal polarized waves which is capable of switching over transmission polarization to horizontal polarization or vertical polarization for each transmission-reception module and performing simultaneous reception of two polarized waves of the horizontal polarized wave and the vertical one. A control system electrically divides the phased array antenna in the direction of elevation during transmission and sets one of the divided antenna for horizontal polarization transmission and the other for vertical polarization transmission, while setting the antenna for the simultaneous reception of the two polarized waves of the horizontal polarized wave and the vertical one. An SAR processing device performs a polarimetry SAR processing by treating horizontal polarization reception data and vertical polarization reception data, which are complex data, as a target vector and by obtaining operational results equivalent to a covariance matrix of the target vector of full polarimetry. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in a full polarimetry SAR, a range S/A (signal-to-virtual image ratio) of cross polarization components (HV component, VH component) of a received reflection wave may become worse.SOLUTION: An SAR apparatus has: a first receiver for receiving an H polarized wave; a second receiver for receiving a V polarized wave; a transmitter which generates a frequency-modulated pulse signal and outputs the pulse signal; a phase shifter which switches a phase of an inputted pulse signal at 180° each time the pulse signal is inputted, and outputs the pulse signal; an H polarized wave antenna which transmits the pulse signal transmitted from the transmitter or the phase shifter with the H polarized wave, receives a reception signal of the H polarized wave, and outputs the reception signal of the received H polarized wave to the first receiver; and a V polarized wave antenna which transmits the pulse signal transmitted from the transmitter or the phase shifter with the V polarized wave, receives a reception signal of the V polarized wave, and outputs the reception signal of the received V polarized wave to the second receiver.
