A mechanism for memory reduction in picture-in-picture video generation is disclosed. A method of embodiments of the invention includes receiving, from a transmitting device, a plurality of video streams at a receiving device coupled to the transmitting device, wherein a first video stream of the plurality of video streams is designated to be displayed as a main video and one or more other video streams of the plurality of video streams are designated to be displayed as one or more sub videos to the main video. The method further includes transforming the one or more other video streams into the one or more sub videos, temporarily holding the one or more sub videos in a compressed frame buffer, and merging, via pixel replacement, the main video and the one or more sub videos into a final video image capable of being displayed on a single screen utilizing a display device, wherein pixel replacement is performed such that the one or more sub videos occupy one or more sections of pixels of screen space pixels occupied by the main video.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, in the past, changing points of a fast blanking (FB) signal have been caught at one level having hysteresis and a given waveform has been generated based on the caught changing points, and so an internal signal has not reflected the waveform characteristics of the FB signal, sometimes resulting in disorder in the boundary between a main screen and a sub-screen. SOLUTION: A first waveform generating part 14 generates a waveform based on a result of comparison between an analog FB signal (switching signal) and a first reference potential performed by a first comparing part 12, and a second waveform generating part 18 generates a waveform based on a result of comparison between the analog FB signal and a second reference potential performed by a second comparing part 16. The inclination of waveform of the switching signal is reflected on the output of an averaging part 19 by causing the output of the first waveform generating part 14 and the output of the second waveform generating part 18 to pass through the averaging part 19. As a result, processing to gradually switch the boundary between the main screen and the sub-screen becomes possible to prevent the disorder in the boundary. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video image display apparatus capable of switching a video display state without depending on user operation. SOLUTION: A projector 1 has a single screen display mode for displaying a video image based on a single video signal and a double screen display mode for displaying video images based on two video signals. While a video signal is input only to an input terminal T1 and no video signal is input to an input terminal T2 (as shown in Fig.1(a)), the projector 1 is set to the single screen display mode and a video image based on the video signal from a PC 1 is displayed on a main window 100. When it is confirmed that a video signal is input to the input terminal T2 in execution of the single screen display mode, the projector 1 is switched from the single screen display mode to the double screen display mode (as shown in Fig.1(b)) and a video image based on the video signal from the PC 1 and a video image based on the video signal from a PC 2 are concurrently displayed within one screen.
