Abstract: Molten metal is produced by (i) charging coke and metal to a cupola furnace; (ii) buring the coke with introduced O2-contg. gas (I); (iii) additionally injecting O2-contg. gas (II) having a higher O2 concn. than (I) into the furnace, at a rate of flow such that the O2 concn. of (I) is enriched by 0.5-10%. The improvement is that the gas (II) is injected into the furnace at a supersonic velocity. Metal melting is more efficient than in other methods in which oxygen is injected directy into the furnace, because the increased rate of flow of ozygen gives increased combusion reasction penetration. Thus, less coke or fuel is required.

Abstract: Oxalate diesters are prepared by contacting a nitrogen oxide and a saturated C1-8 monohydric aliphatic alcohol in the vapor state in a nitrite forming reaction zone at 10-300≦̸C, followed by contacting of the nitrite free of H2O with CO in the vapor state in a oxalate forming reaction zone at 50-200≦̸C over a supported Pd catalyst. The process is continuous in recycling the final effluence containing nitrogen oxide to initial step.
