Abstract: A tear-off closure is provided which has a top end wall and a depending skirt and having a tear strip defined by scoring divisive of the end wall and into the skirt, the tear strip having at least one embossed rib therein which extends from a location toward the center of the closure radially outward to a location adjacent the shoulder of the closure between its end wall and the skirt to ensure severance of the tear strip over such shoulder of the closure. The closure may further have a raised rim around a recessed central panel in its top end wall, with the rib in the tear strip extending from the recessed central panel into the rim of the closure.

Abstract: A container wall or end closure is provided which has a hollow upwardly convex embossment formed in it, and at least one radially extending score line in an outer portion of the embossment which will be ruptured to form a vent opening in the closure when force is applied against the center of the embossment. The container wall may further include an inclined wall formed therein around the periphery of the embossment and a thinned zone or band of material in such wall to facilitate rupture of the score in the embossment. A method of forming such a container closure is also provided.

Abstract: A method of forming an annular knurled band on two surfaces of a container closure by providing a generally cylindrical closure shell having a top panel and a depending annular skirt. Forming a plurality of outwardly directed knurled portions within a plurality of first circumferential arcs by outwardly reforming the arcs to establish in each knurled section a lower portion extending radially outwardly from the annular skirt and an upper portion formed as a continuous extension of the lower portion, extending upwardly and outwardly from the top panel. Forming a plurality of inwardly directed knurl portions in second circumferential arcs in alternating position with the outwardly directed knurl portions by restraining the second arcs against outward movement. The closure having both the outwardly directed and the inwardly directed knurled portions each of substantially uniform transverse width throughout their longitudinal extent. The knurling originates within the upper half of the skirt and terminates at its uppermost level in the upper panel.

Abstract: A safety closure assembly is provided which includes an inner cap with threads formed in its skirt for affixation to a container by turning the cap, vertically aligned corrugations in the outer surface of the top portion of the cap skirt and an outwardly projecting bead on the lower edge of the skirt, and further including an outer flexible plastic cap which fits over the inner cap and which has inwardly projecting, vertically aligned teeth on its inner surface for engagement with the corrugations on the inner cap, an inwardly projecting flange on the bottom edge of the skirt for engagement under the bead on the inner cap to preclude separation of the caps, and an inwardlyupwardly inclined inner surface of the skirt above such flange for engagement against the outer surface of the bead on the inner cap to spring the outer cap upwardly with respect to the inner cap and thereby prevent engagement of the teeth on the outer cap with the corrugation on the inner cap unless substantial downward force is applied against the top of the outer cap.
