A point of sale (POS) bar code scanner such as in common use in retail stores includes provision for reading bar coded redemption coupons (or other bar coded documents redeemable for value) in a manner secure from a human operator. Integration of functions between the POS scanner and the coupon reader varies with different embodiments described. Through software associated with bar code decoding logic, a comparison is made between information on a validation coupon and information on items presented for purchase, and a decision is made as to whether the redemption coupon is valid and redeemable in this transaction. In one embodiment, the bar code scanner simply receives the redemption coupon face down on the product scanner window, and integrated decode logic of the scanner identifies the bar code as belonging to a redemption coupon, then makes the comparison and validation of the coupon for the particular transaction. In some embodiments of the invention, the POS product scanner has a special beam exit window through which the scanning beam is diverted when it is signified that a redemption coupon is to be read, with a coupon reading scan pattern. After validation the coupon may be punched or otherwise cancelled, and/or sent to a secure container. Several types of securing devices are disclosed, for preventing subsequent use of redeemed coupons.

An automated check-out system for retail stores, such as supermarkets, employing digitized video signals and other means to determine and differentiate individual products, and thereby register the data for billing and inventory purposes. The sensors control the flow and positioning of retail items into the housing wherein the light source is regulated and controlled. Within the housing, optical imaging of the retail item is made with the electronic signal being digitized. By use of computerized databases, the digitized signal is compared to the finite set of data for products of approximately the same size, shape, weight and other comparative variables. Further confirmation of product identity is achieved by use of bar code differentiation, multiple image comparisons and, if necessary, optical display to the store personnel operating the cash register station serving multiple check-out lanes within the store. The customer is guided through the transaction by use of a video display screen. Once the items are registered, the customer then may bag the items and proceed to the centralized cashier station to complete the transaction.

A point of sale system involving a series of check stands with POS cash registers and bar code scanners includes a lottery ticket issuing and redemption system. A number pick stand in the store, apart from the checkout stands, enables the customer to choose numbers. Pick slips can be generated by the customer at this stand, and bear a bar coded transaction number which can be communicated to a lottery device at each check stand. The pick slip is readable at the check stand bar code reader along with a series of store-inventory items. The customer is automatically charged for the lottery ticket, and the ticket is printed at the check stand. At the time the ticket is issued, the lottery transaction is recorded via modem to the central lottery computer of the state or other controlling agency. In another embodiment the number pick stand may encode the actual picked numbers on the pick slip, in an extended field bar code. The system of the invention enables lottery ticket transactions to be smoothly and efficiently handled at each check stand of a supermarket without in substantially the same manner grocery items are handled and without burdensome and expensive duplication of lottery equipment.
