    Abstract: A variable turbine geometry turbine turbocharger (1) includes a vane ring assembly (29) configured to control flow of exhaust gas to a turbine wheel (12), and retainers (60, 160) that are used to secure the vane ring assembly (29) to the bearing housing (16) in a desired axial and radial position and angular orientation relative to the bearing housing (16). In some embodiments, the vane ring assembly (29) is spring biased toward an axially outward position relative to the bearing housing (16), and the retainers (60, 160) retain the vane (30) ring in the desired position against the spring bias.

    Abstract: A variable turbine geometry assembly includes an adjustment ring extending along and rotatable about an axis, at least one vane lever coupled to the adjustment ring, and at least one vane coupled to the at least one vane lever. The variable turbine geometry assembly also includes a biasing member coupled to the adjustment ring at a first circumferential location on the adjustment ring and coupled to the adjustment ring at a second circumferential location on the adjustment ring. The biasing member extends from the first circumferential location to the second circumferential location. The biasing member is operably in contact with the at least one vane lever between the first circumferential location and the second circumferential location to bias the at least one vane lever toward the adjustment ring and to reduce vibration between the adjustment ring and the at least one vane lever.

    Abstract: A turbocharger (18) includes a shaft (20), a mixed flow turbine wheel (40) including a wheel hub (44) and blades having tips (42), and a heat shield (11). The heat shield (11) has a side wall, an end (19), and a contoured front edge (13) that connects the sidewall (16) and the end (19). The front edge (13) of the heat shield (11) defines a slope that forms an imaginary line that is angled relative to the sidewall (16) and the end (19), and intersects an axis of rotation of the shaft (20). The heat shield (11) resides at a position that is between a bearing housing (22) of the turbocharger (18) and the turbine wheel (40), and axially inward relative to an axially-facing surface of a turbine volute (24), and between the bearing housing (22) and the turbine wheel (40).

    Abstract: A variable turbine geometry assembly for controlling flow of exhaust gas to a turbine wheel of a turbocharger includes an adjustment ring extending about an axis and rotatable about the axis, at least one vane lever coupled to the adjustment ring, and at least one vane coupled to the at least one vane lever. The at least one vane is moveable with respect to the adjustment ring when the adjustment ring rotates about the axis. The variable turbine geometry assembly further includes a wave spring operably in contact with at least one of the at least one vane lever and the adjustment ring. The wave spring is configured to bias one of the at least one vane lever and the adjustment ring toward the other of the at least one vane lever and the adjustment ring.
