Abstract: A turbocharger is used within a vehicle and includes an electronic actuator assembly. The electronic actuator assembly includes an actuator housing coupled to at least one of the turbine housing, the compressor housing, and the bearing housing, and an accelerometer coupled to the actuator housing. The accelerometer is adapted to detect vibration of at least one of the turbine housing, the compressor housing, the bearing housing, and the actuator housing thereby obtaining acceleration data of at least one of the turbine housing, the compressor housing, the bearing housing, and the actuator housing to determine rotational speed of the turbocharger shaft. Another embodiment includes a vibration detection assembly having an accelerometer coupled to a vehicle component and the vehicle component is one or more of a turbocharger, a valve assembly, an electronically driven compressor, and a turbocharger having an integral electric motor.

Abstract: A power electronics assembly that controls an electrically-actuated turbocharger includes a printed circuit board (PCB) having a non-conductive substrate supporting one or more electrical components that attach to the non-conductive substrate on one or more sides of the PCB; one or more conductive layers that couple with the non-conductive substrate and conduct electrical current within the PCB; a fluid barrier layer applied to an outer surface of the non-conductive substrate or conductor layer; and a PCB housing, configured to couple with the electrically-actuated turbocharger, having a fluid cavity that communicates liquid from an internal combustion engine (ICE) to the fluid barrier layer separating the liquid and the PCB.

Abstract: A wastegate assembly with a valve head moved linearly toward and away from a wastegate port via a valve stem. When the valve is in an open position the valve seat face of the valve head is spaced apart from the valve seat. When the valve is in a closed position the valve seat face of the valve head is secured against the valve seat. The wastegate assembly includes a sidewall surrounding the wastegate port elongated in the direction of valve movement. The contoured side wall widens going away from the valve seat. The minimum flow area through the wastegate port is controlled such that the flow is choked via the side wall rather than the valve curtain area. The contoured side wall can be recessed into the housing or extend from the housing.

Abstract: An exhaust gas turbocharger with a wastegate port configured to permit some exhaust gas flow to exit a turbine volute upstream of the turbine wheel and enter a bypass channel thereby bypassing the turbine wheel, a valve with a valve head dimensioned to seat on a valve seat and to move between a seated position and an open position, the bypass channel having a sidewall contoured to surround the valve head as the valve head moves between the seated position and the open position, he bypass channel sidewall shaped so that a throat area (At) area between the bypass channel sidewall and valve head gradually increases as the valve head moves between the seated and the open position, such the bypass flow is controlled by the throat area (At) and not the area between the valve head and the valve seat.
