Abstract: A dyestuff preparation practically free from electrolyte is made by treating a complex chromium or cobalt compound of an azo dyestuff in an aqueous medium with a cellulose ester either during or after the metallization process, at least one part of dyestuff being used for each 4 parts of cellulose ester. The metallized dyestuff may be a complex chromium or cobalt compound of an o-hydroxy-o1-amino- or o: o1-dihydroxy monoazo dyestuff free from sulphonic acid and carboxyl groups, or a complex chromium compound of an o-carboxy-o1-hydroxy-monoazo dyestuff. 1: 2 complexes are preferred. Specified cellulose esters are the acetate, including the triacetate, and nitro-cellulose. With the exception of sulphonic acid and carboxyl groups the dyestuffs may contain a wide variety of non-ionic substituents, e.g. chlorine atoms and nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, alkyl-sulphoxide and alkyl sulphonic groups. Reaction products of the metal complexes with colourless or coloured amines may be used. Metallization may be effected with cobalt or chromium compounds of aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acids or dicarboxylic acids, e.g. oxalic, lactic, glycollic, citric and tartaric acids, and chromium compounds of aromatic o-hydroxy carboxylic acids, e.g. 4-, 5-, or 6-methyl-1 hydroxy benzene-2-carboxylic acid and 1 - hydroxybenzene - 2 - carboxylic acid, containing the metal bound in complex union. As cobalt-yielding agents there can also be used simple compounds of divalent cobalt, e.g. cobalt sulphate or cobalt acetate. Desirably, the weight of cellulose ester in the composition is less than four times the weight of dyestuff and is preferably within the range of 0.3 to 1.2 times the weight of dyestuff. The dyestuff preparations may be made by treating an organic metallized dyestuff, during or after the metallization process, in an aqueous medium with a cellulose ester. The treatment may be carried out at 50-120 DEG C., suitably in the presence of a swelling agent for the cellulose ester, e.g. an aliphatic alcohol or ester, e.g. ethyl and isopropyl alcohols, glycol, and ethyl acetate. Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether may also be used. The preparations are soluble in organic solvents, e.g. esters, alcohol and acetone, and may be used for the manufacture of coloured cellulose ester films, and for the spin-dyeing of cellulose acetate yarn. In an example, a dyestuff made from diazotized 1-hydroxy-2-amino-benzene-4-sulphonic acid amide and 2-hydroxy naphthalene is suspended in water to which is added isopropyl alcohol, a cobalt acetate solution, sodium acetate and cellulose acetate, the mixture heated, the alcohol distilled off and the residue filtered, washed and dried. The dyestuff preparation so made is dissolved in a spinning solution of cellulose acetate in acetone, which is dry-spun to obtain a yarn having a deep red tint. Other examples are given. Specifications 684,646, 716,753, 743,907, 745,641, 746,944, 781,286, 832,206, 875,712, 924,452 and 973,238 are referred to.
