Abstract: Data storage systems are disclosed for automatically generating encryption rules based on a set of training files that are known to include sensitive information. The system may use a number of heuristic algorithms to generate one or more encryption rules for determining whether a file includes sensitive information. Further, the system may apply the heuristic algorithms to the content of the files, as determined by using natural language processing algorithms, to generate the encryption rules. Moreover, systems are disclosed that are capable of automatically determining whether to encrypt a file based on the generated encryption rules. The content of the file may be determined using natural language processing algorithms and then the encryption rules may be applied to the content of the file to determine whether to encrypt the file.

Abstract: Techniques for providing data preview before recalling large data files are disclosed. In one aspect, a data file is made accessible while being offline by converting the data file from a native format to a preview format, storing the data file in the preview format in a primary storage that is locally available and moving, after the conversion to the preview format, the data file in the native format to a secondary storage. When a viewing request is received for the data file, the data file in the preview format is displayed to fulfill the viewing request.

Abstract: Backup data is leveraged to determine whether primary data has been encrypted by malware. The disclosed approach does not rely on recognizing particular malware instances or malware provenance, and thus can be applied to any body of data. Even a novel and previously unknown malware attack can be detected in this way. An illustrative data storage management system analyzes secondary copies it created over time, applies a multi-factor analysis to data recovered from the secondary copies and, based on the analysis, infers whether the primary data from which the secondary copies were created may be encrypted. The present approach uses successive versions of backup copies to find indicia of malware encryption, rather than trying to trace or identify the malware itself. Indicia of entropy correlate highly with encryption, such as encryption performed by malware attacks. Conversely, indicia of similarity correlate highly with lack of encryption of successive versions of documents.
