Abstract: The invention comprises (1) silanes of the general formula and (2) siloxanes which are homopolymers of the unit general formula or copolymers thereof with units of the general formula wherein each X is a halogen atom or a radical of the formula R1 is a hydrogen atom or monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R11 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, each Y is divalent and is p-phenylene; 4,41 - diphenylene; 4,4 - diphenylene ether; 4,41 - dimethylenebenzene or 4,41 - dimethylenediphenyl ether radical, R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical free from aliphatic unsaturation, W is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon and m is 0, 1, 2 or 3. Suitable R1 hydrocarbon radicals are alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aralkyl, alkaryl and aryl. Suitable R radicals are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl and alkyl. Silanes (1), wherein X is chlorine, are prepared (i) by reacting 1 mole of HSi(R)2.Y.Si(R)2H and at least 2 moles of CH2 = CHSi(R)2Cl, or (ii) by reacting 1 mole of CH2 = CHSi(R)2.Y.Si(R)2.CH = CH2 and at least 2 moles of HSi(R)2Cl; in both cases suitable catalysts are platinum black, platinum on a carrier, and salts of platinum, e.g. chloroplatinic acids, and suitable temperatures are 50 DEG to 150 DEG C. The terminal chlorine atoms of the silane may be replaced by other groups X in the usual way. Siloxanes (2) are prepared by hydrolysing silanes (1); the resulting hydrolysate may be further polymerized, e.g. by alkalimetal hydroxides, H2SO4 or C6H5SO3H. Siloxane copolymers (3) wherein m is preferably 2, are prepared (a) by cohydrolysis of the silane (1) wherein X is chlorine and a silane WmSiCl4- m, or (b) by mixing homopolymer siloxanes (2) and homopolymer siloxanes of units in the presence of a siloxane-bond rearranging catalyst, or (iii) mixing a compound a siloxane of unit formula containing a plurality of hydroxyl groups, and a catalyst, e.g. an organic isocyanate or a b -amino acid or lactam. These may be cross-linked or cured, e.g. by organic peroxides or high energy radiation. Suitable additives are fillers (e.g. silica, alumina, clay, carbon black), pigments, plasticizers and compression set additives. Many examples are given. Uses: Siloxane polymers are used as film-forming agents, as bases for silicone elastomers, rubbers and plastics, e.g. for gasketing and coating applications. Specifications 836,954 and 864,252 are referred to.
